11:00 Blender – Essentials of Hard Surface Modeling

ConceptExplanation
Hard Surface vs. OrganicHard surface modeling deals with rigid, man-made objects (cars, robots, armor). Organic modeling deals with flexible, natural forms (characters, creatures).
Non-Destructive WorkflowUsing Modifiers to make changes to the mesh. The original mesh remains simple, and changes can be reversed or adjusted at any time. (Crucial for iteration!)
Boolean OperationsUsing one mesh (the “Cutter”) to cut, add to, or intersect another mesh (the “Target”).
BevelingAdding a chamfer or radius to a sharp edge. This is essential for catching light and making a model look real. The real world has bevels!
N-gons & QuadsThe goal is typically to maintain quads (4-sided faces) for predictable subdivision, but N-gons (5+ sided faces) are often acceptable on flat, hard surfaces, especially when using the Boolean workflow. If the asset is going to be static in a game engine, an n-gon is not the end of the world.
