Week 28 Distance Learning (March 23rd – 27th)

Week 28 Distance Learning (March 23rd – 27th)

Welcome to Week 28 “Distance Learning” in Cawd. Inside this document you are going to find:

  • Introduction
  • Tasks to complete this week
  • Due dates – evidence of completion
  • Optional activities
  • Contacting Mr. Cronin

Introduction

This week will commence our “Distance Learning” in Cawd. The first task is to read through the Introduction to Cawd Distance Learning document. If there are any questions please email me so we can clarify.

Workflow

  • Assignments will be posted Monday at 12:00 for that specific week.
  • Deliverables are to be submitted by Friday at 3pm for that weeks work.

I am going to use our Cawd Dayplans as our primary communications tool, and email to follow up with individual students. Please be checking your email once a day to stay connected.

Tasks to complete this week

This week we are going to have a number of tasks to complete to acclimate to our new learning model.

First. Fill out the specific Cawd tech survey. We need to find ways that all students can write code at home.

Second. Complete your 3rd Quarter Still Life Proficiency Sketch. Remember as a summative project for this unit it is a larger grade than a typical Design Homework. The specifics for the assignment can be found in the Monday, March 16th Dayplan.

Third. We are starting to move into our 4th Quarter traditional art focus of Portraits. Cawd has 3 focuses over the year which connect to a number of traditional artistic skills. These skills also connect to a number of higher education program portfolio requirements, such as Champlain College’s Game Art Portfolio requirements.

  • 2nd Quarter – focus on 1, 2, and 3 Point Perspective
  • 3rd Quarter – focus on Still Life
  • 4th Quarter – Portraits

To start our Portrait focus we need to create a dated baseline sketch. As we always do to start a unit we want to first see where the student current skills exist. This will also give us a before / after model where students are going to present their growth in the creation of portraits.

Take your sketchbook (or any paper) and draw a Portrait from top of shoulders to top of the head. The figure you sketch should be roughly facing us.

Make sure you name and date – the date specifically will be important as it will show progression of your skills.

Fourth. On the Cawd Webserver I want you to create a folder called “distance” in your root directory. This will be outside of your weekly folders, as if it was another week. This will demonstrate that you can connect to the Web Server, and will be able to work on more than sketching assignments going forward.

Log in with the same credentials you have used all year in Cawd. If you need specifics on how to log on please email me.

If you don’t have Filezilla or Atom installed, please do so this week.

Fifth. Have your family/guardian check their email and respond to the CTE wide questions we have sent them.

Due dates – evidence of completion

  • Fill out the Cawd Tech Survey by 3pm Friday 3/27
  • Complete your 3rd Quarter Still Life Proficiency Sketch. Take a photo and email to Mr. Cronin by 3pm Friday 3/27.
  • Complete your 4th Quarter Baseline Portrait Sketch. Take a photo and email to Mr. Cronin by 3pm Friday 3/27.
  • Create the “distance” folder on your Cawd site by 3pm Friday 3/27.
  • Have parents check email and respond to my CTE-wide questions by 3pm Friday 3/27.

Optional activities

These articles, videos, and sketch are optional. They can be done with family or by yourself. Some pretty interesting topics – good to stay connected to our industries.

  • Article – Coronavirus: Ways to stay social online while in self-isolation
  • Article – Apple’s new iPad has built-in laser depth-scanner
  • Video – Life and struggle after YouTube fame
  • Video – Facial recognition: Artists trying to fool cameras
  • Sketch – Take the next page of your sketchbook and sketch a famous celebrity or pop culture icon. Someone that the masses should know.

Contacting Mr. Cronin

I am going to hold “office hours” where I sit at my computer on Monday’s from 10-12. My work email goes right to my phone, so you are going to have no trouble contacting me outside of this. I will respond as soon as I can. I have already been in contact with students at different times during the day – let’s just keep that communication flowing as normal.
