1st Year Course of Study

1st Semester:

3D Graphics:

  • Modeling
  • Lighting
  • Texturing
  • Animation
  • Character Animation
  • Emphasis of creating emotion and and story to digital creations, from simple to complex
  • Modeling / Texturing for Video Games using the Unreal Engine
  • Level design and development
  • Game asset creation and export

Video Editing:

  • Creating narratives using 3D content, as well as video footage with sound effects. This will incorporate both video and audio editing software

2D Design:

  • Image manipulation / editing / restoration
  • 2D Animation
  • Extensive use of image manipulation software such as Photoshop, and illustration software such Illustrator
  • Using Photoshop and Illustrator to create textures, terrain maps, and other work specifically for use in 3D projects
  • Use of Photoshop and Illustrator to create stand alone artwork, as illustrations, photo projects, etc
  • Traditional hand sketches, including but not limited to specific drawing techniques, still life’s, concept art, pre-production work, and storyboards

Game Design:

  • Basic mechanics of game design
  • Logic programming
  • On screen displays
  • Game asset workflow

Midterm Exam:

Midterms in Computer Animation and Web Page Design will consist of a combination of all the skills learned form the 1st semester including:

  • 3D Practical Project
  • 2D Practical Project
  • Written Exam

2nd Semester:

Web Design:

  • html5
  • CSS3
  • JavaScript
  • Responsive Web Design
  • Programming for the internet
  • Databases
  • Content Management Systems (CMS)

2D Design:

  • Exploring past, current, and future trends and best practices of web design
  • Web Graphics and optimization
  • Site Layouts
  • Continued work with hand drawn art creating logos, layouts, and related topics

Final Exam:

  • Online Portfolio featuring your best work of the year

Dual Enrollment Opportunities:

During the 2nd semester students with appropriate Cawd grade and Accuplacer scores will have the opportunity to “Dual Enroll” in the Vermont State College System as well as CTE. During this time you may earn college credit for your time in CAWD, specifically the courses:

  • Web Development – 3 credit college class
  • Digital Image Manipulation (CAWD2 student only) – 3 credit college class

Students must meet minimum requirements in program grade (A level) and Accuplacer test results to be eligible, in addition to recommendation from the instructor.

design competitions:

Students will have the opportunity to take part in design competitions run by organizations such SkillsUSA.  Students in Cawd and Cawd2 will take part in Pin Design (graphic design), Web Design, Interactive Application and Video Game Design, and 3D Animation and Visualization competitions among others. Student success at the class level lead to state and national competitions, college scholarships, and resume building experiences.

Certification Opportunities:

During our web centric semester, students who we feel are ready may take the World Organization of Web Designer Certification Exam. This exam is run by an internationally recognized organization know for their work on web standards.

Job Shadow opportunities:

If I feel you are ready for it, selected students have Job Shadows at local businesses and design firms.  You get to go out in industry and see how real businesses are run.  This is retained for the top 50% of the class – held as a honor to students ready for it academically, and eager to build their resume for college / internships / work.
