9:45 A 50,000 Overview of our CAWD Weekly Schedule
This is all up for adjustment as needed. I am going to make alterations based on what is best for learning in the room. This week will be one of those adjustments as we started in a short week, started school, and are getting into the swing of things.
Today we will have a short window of time to complete and prepare projects for presentations to the class. This typically will start at 9:45 on Monday mornings, but again, starting school, let’s get everyone acclimated to the pace of CAWD. Going forward you are going to need projects ready to go Monday morning when we take attendance. You will have PM Production every day, you can work at home, you can arrive in the room at 9:20, you can work at lunch – or complete the projects in class.
Any work not ready to produce will receive a 0 until you present the work to me individually, and work will be docked a letter grade per day. After 1 week missing the maximum grade you can get is a 50…but that is much better than a zero.
9:55 Start of School Bonus Production Time
Last week there were 2 projects assigned to be graded. Your Castle and your Organic Creation.
What are the Castle project specifics? Let’s go and look.
What are the Organic Creation project specifics? Let’s go and look.
In our Public Drive, inside of “week_01” create a folder that is your last name, lower case. Place all the assets into this folder by the time specified. I will copy down this folder as a snapshot in time – who as their work turned in correctly? It is from this folder that we will present.
I don’t want all your assets, just the specified assets to turn in.
Not the Blender file of your Castle, but the renders, as jpgs.
Not the Photoshop file of your Organic Creation, but the copy, saved as a jpg.
If your work is there = you are good to go.
If your work is missing = you earn 0’s.
Pretty simple system, let’s ask questions and work this morning so we can learn about our workflow.
10:35 Morning Outside Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minutes outside / just out our door.
- Throw the Frisbee, toss the football, kick the kickball, or just get some Vitamin D and not be at a desk.
10:45 Class Critiques
During Class Critiques we will see the work that you have done, and we will be giving and receiving Constructive Criticism.
Constructive Criticism is a helpful way of giving feedback that provides specific, actionable suggestions. Rather than providing general advice, constructive criticism gives specific recommendations on how to make positive improvements. Constructive Criticism is clear, to the point and easy to put into action.
Some initially take offense at any Constructive Criticism. This is something we all (myself included) need to work on. Our reactions need to change from defensive as a default, to an ability to hear another perspective. We don’t need to agree with an individuals Constructive Criticism, but if the suggestion is reasonable, logical, and echoed by others, it may be something to listen to.
Constructive Criticism (when done well – our goal) also allows us to separate the design from the designer. There will always be coworkers / classmates you don’t love / gel with / like, but you can still have a professional working relationship. If you follow the recipe for successful Constructive Criticism above, you can be an effective professional in almost any situation.
Starting next week there will be a student per Critique session that give Constructive Criticism. This will give you the chance to practice and industry standard activity. This week I will model Constructive Criticism.
We will not get through all students, and we will pick up with the remainder Tuesday mornings. Maybe 50% today, 50% tomorrow – and as I have the folder as snapshot in time everyone gets the same deadline.
11:35 CAWD Sketch Lessons
Today we will have our first Sketch Lesson, specifically looking at what we have for Art Cup supplies.
I don’t know if because it is humid, or because they are brand new, or because they are haunted…but I find those kneaded erasers sticky, and they are coming apart? So I took them all back, and will burn them.
In exchange you can have a rubber eraser, or upgrade to a higher quality kneaded eraser. Up to you.
12:00 Design Homework 1: Free Sketch
Design Homework’s are hand drawn creations done weekly. Some will be hyper specific, some will be open ended.
This week we are going to assign DH2, Design Homework 2. It is going to be a free sketch. Take the first/next page of your sketchbook and create anything you wish. Acceptable topics could be:
- Landscape
- Object
- Something abstract
- Typography
- Logos
- A video game layout
- A car
- A Portrait
- … when it is a free sketch, it could be anything.
For presentations next week you will turn in a .jpg of your sketch. Either a high quality photo of your work, or a scanned image of your sketch.
Your sketch will be called “(lastName)DH2.jpg”. For example my file would be called:
- “croninDH2.jpg”
When would you do this graded assignment? PM production time, at home, whenever. It just has to be ready at the start of class next week.
Remember Sketchbooks go home with you each day – I recommend keeping them in your bag so when you have 5, 10, 15 minutes here and there you can get a lot of Homework Done during a normal day.
12:15 Lunch (30 Minutes)
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.
12:45 Attendance and Article
12:50 Guided Practice
1:10 Afternoon Outside Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minutes outside / just out our door.
- Throw the Frisbee, toss the football, kick the kickball, or just get some Vitamin D and not be at a desk.

As we are starting the week, you already know 2 of your 3 assignments from CAWD this week:
