- We all need to get DH9 done today so tomorrow we can use it with our partners. If you don’t finish today, finish as homework and bring in tomorrow.

Jackie will be giving constructive criticism today. Pick out one thing that works, and one thing to improve upon in the future.
11:35 DH9 – Partner Based Haunted Graveyard Level Concept Art
Leading up to Halloween, over the next two weeks you are going to be working with a partner to develop a Haunted Graveyard level in Unreal. This will be something we can play and explore as a video game environment.
This is going to practice:
- Working in teams
- Lead Artist
- Lead Level Designer
- Stylistic/theme choices and then being consistent. Do you want to go low poly, do you want to go realistic? Pick a lane, stay in the lane.
- Asset creation in Blender, and exporting for game engines.
- Terrain / world creation in Unreal. Importing external assets.
- Meeting deadlines with correct deliverables.
Over the next two weeks we are going to cover:
- Changing lighting in Unreal from default “noon”-ish look.
- Fog
- Extended material creation and application in Blender and Unreal
- Audio in game
- Removing the default character / changing the default “gun” to something else. Flashlight?
- etc.
The first thing we have to complete by the end of the day today is DH9. You are going to create a page of concept art of what the idea of “Haunted Graveyard” means to you. You are going to learn who your partner is tomorrow and you are going to need to have an initial designers meeting to decide the aesthetic, roles, and general direction of the project.
What art style do you want, realism or stylized low poly?
Are we in 2021, or the past, like Salem Witch trials time period?
Are we urban, are we in the country?
Is it an abandoned cemetery? Functional with open graves being dug with lanterns?
Are we in a valley, on a mountain top? Are we in the middle of a city block without use of terrain?
What types of assets would you add in?
- Lanterns?
- Shovels?
- Bodies?
- Gravestones / both upright and broken down?
- Carriage to carry bodies?
- Fences?
- Mausoleums?
- Trees / forests?
- Buildings?
- etc
Remember that this will be at night, and the goal is that we get a genuinely scary or spooky vibe.
Fill up a piece of paper with design language, items, environments, colors, words – all so when you meet with your partner tomorrow you are ready to begin. You don’t want your first impression to your partner to be “I didn’t finish it” – who do you want to be in the picture? Let’s try to have 50/50 division of labor for this project! This will be presented for grade a week from today, as “(lastName)DH9.jpg”. Scan it in by next week. Everyone should finish this before pivoting to work on Agency work in the afternoon.
