11:35 Intro to Visitors
CAWD will get slammed with visitors. Students want to see what we do in our program to apply next year.
Visitors are the only way in CAWD to earn extra credit and buoy that grade. All we ask is you do a good job when you have them. Here is the process:
- Introduce yourself.
- Have them fill out this quick Visitor Info form – just so we connect with them later. This form will be available in every Dayplan we have visitors in the Notes section so it is easy to find.
- Show off your 3 best projects that you are most proud of. Which are you most proud of? These could be what I assigned, an agency, or even something you are crafting that you haven’t turned in yet. Your best work.
Students that are working with visitors will see their names show up in the Notes section of the Dayplan.
Depending on the visit times, we may/may not have an article, we may have an adjusted break – we will just go with the flow.
When not working with a visitor you are to follow the expectations of the Dayplan. Tomorrow students without visitors will be working on a Texture Paint project that we will present right after our AM break.
Remember that these kids are coming from other schools, and are likely super nervous. We have home field advantage, they are going out of their comfort zone to try something new, so the #1 Goal when working with visitors is that we are welcoming. I don’t think I would have had the courage to try something new as a high school student, so let’s honor that courage and do our best to make them feel at home.
I want you to pick 3 projects you are most proud of, and email the names of the projects to me at “cawdLead@vt.ewsd.org“. Your subject of the email can be “projects” and then you just simply list your projects. We are going to take some time for you to go through your folders and find 3 projects you can talk about, open up, and show off. Everyone in the room has work they can be proud of and talk about for a while. How did you build it? What did you do this effect, or that effect?
Collect the three project names and email me now – this is your exit activity to get you to lunch. We will take 10 minutes to do this. What could you talk about? Fill the time with?
After you show off your best work, I want you TEACHING the student how to do something. I want them driving the mouse and keyboard. Teach them some basic animation, or basic modeling, or how to create terrain in Unreal, or … anything.
What you never, ever do is look at me with time left and say “I am done, take them away.” At the worst WORST case scenario, you can always pivot to some of the work that you are currently doing. Just never stop talking, we don’t want awkward silence.
Welcoming is the goal.
We never want awkward silence, and to be ignoring the visitors. Keep them engaged, it will make it easier for you as well. If you are watching the computer clock the time won’t move, just get into some work with the visitors and it will go faster. Keep talking!
Hey – look – a Wednesday!
