12:10 DH23: Bottles and Jugs
Our 3rd Quarter is focused on improving your Still Life drawing skills. We have finished our baseline still-life sketch. We are now going to spend the next couple of weeks breaking down the class still life into individual elements, and improve our sketching of them. Then toward the end of the quarter we will put everything back together into a final, improved still life.
This week the focus is on bottles and jugs – wine bottles are a classic – but really anything that is glass and symmetrical.
Below is a resource on how to draw these types of shapes well. The first 4 minutes are direct instruction where the artist explains the process, and the final 12 are a relaxing time-lapse he does the shading.
Watch it all. At the very least watch the first 4 minutes to see how to build the structure, and then from 10 minutes to the end to see how to incorporate shading.
After you have watched it I want you to turn to the next page of your sketchbook and draw a table with:
- 7 different bottles and jugs of at least 3 different styles.
- Shading on the bottles, shading on the ground – have a consistent light direction.
- Color optional, shading required.
Sign and date.
