9:45 Nineteen Eighty-Four

10:05 Web Design

  • Content Management Systems
    • After your site is built and ready to be simply USED by a client, using a CMS can make a lot of sense. After all your clients aren’t likely smart enough to jump into code to update their sites.
    • CMS’s can be limiting, but help automate a lot of processes. Some programmers hate them as they feel like you are programming on rails, as compared to the full freedom and control of custom code.
    • CMS’s also have many users so there are plugins, security fixes, and themes (designs) which many people contribute to.
    • WordPress is an industry standard, and it helps run the back end of CAWD.
    • Free to use on hosted / branded sites like WordPress.com
    • CMS’s aimed at Web Designers and Developers like WordPress.org

This week we are going to work with WordPress.com – which will give us a great introduction to using CMS’s / WordPress.

Next week we will install the real WordPress software from WordPress.org using Xampp, just like you would if you were running a real web server.

So, let’s give this a shot?
