9:45 Andy Animation – Famous Scene Shot by Shot remake
This week we are going to use our copy of Andy and recreate a famous scene from a movie. This will get us:
- Continuing to practice Character Animation using Andy, specifically focusing on Exaggeration – one of the famous 12 Principles of Animation.
- Work on matching camera angles and timing professionals use. This is to be a shot by shot remake, with exact timing from a Hollywood production.
- Follow the workflow of separate Blender files per shot, individually rendered mp4’s, with the entire project put together in Premiere.
- We are going to use the audio from the movie. No sound design required.
Today I will first show you a famous scene that you could recreate – the Boulder scene from Indiana Jones. You will act as filmmaker Steven Spielberg and mimic his work. As a filmmaker / animator, studying the creative work of luminaries like Spielberg is a great way to improve your craft.
If you would like to choose another scene that is fine, just remember:
- The scene has to practice Character Animation – not dialogue. Think action.
- You will have to model basic scene elements. The scene elements you model are to help frame the animation. The focus is the animation. If you have to model other “characters”, use different color and sized Andy’s.
- Use a website like Clip Converter to take the portion of the clip you want from YouTube. Download the portion of the clip you want, not the entire thing – don’t kill our network.
To turn this in we are going to do something a little different. We are going to include the scene you are recreating on the top of a very strangely sized mp4. The source file and our renders will be 720p (or there about), but stacked on each other for an overall resolution of 1280 x 1440 (or there about). Two vertically stacked videos:
- The source on the top
- Your animation on the bottom
Something sort of like this, a CAWD animation from way back when.
We will use the sound that comes from the famous scene.
At the end of the project will see the Hollywood production at the top, and your recreation on the bottom. Your work on timing, animation, camera angles, editing – will be on full display.
First, let’s use the Indiana Jones example and setup a Premiere file so you can see the basic idea.
10:35 Morning Outside Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minutes outside / just out our door.
- Throw the Frisbee, toss the football, kick the kickball, or just get some Vitamin D and not be at a desk.
10:45 Critiques
Spofford will be giving constructive criticism today. Pick out one thing that works, and one thing to improve upon in the future.
11:35 Andy Animation – Famous Scene Shot by Shot remake
I have to see the clip that you are going to recreate today IN PREMIERE before you are dismissed for lunch. Remember that you can use the Indiana Jones Clip if you wish.
Once I check you off that you have a reasonably length clip (20-25 seconds at a minimum) downloaded and inside your “week_12” Google folder move onto production:
- Start modeling the basic scene that you need / characters.
- Save the “blank” file with Andy and scene elements.
- Start animating. Save each scene as a unique name so you can setup the animation, camera angles, timing, and file output separately.
- Put together in Premiere as you go, so you can see what matches up 1:1 with the industry standard, and what has to be improved.
You will have portions of today, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday to complete this project.
At the end you will save your final completed project (with the odd resolution of 1280 x 1440ish) as “(lastName)andyFamous.mp4”.
12:15 Lunch (30 Minutes)
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.
