9:45 Sound Design Intro
Sound Design is the art and practice of creating sound tracks for a variety of needs. It involves specifying, acquiring or creating auditory elements using audio production techniques and tools.
Today we are going to start working with Sound Design. There are entire areas of our industry that deal with sound, with foley.
In filmmaking, Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to films, videos, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality. Foley can also be used to cover up unwanted sounds captured on the set of a movie during filming, such as overflying airplanes or passing traffic.
As with most everything we do in CAWD, we often fake reality. We fake reality with CGI, we fake reality with Photoshop, and we are going to fake reality with sound.
We will use sound in CAWD to support our animations, our video’s, our game designs. The focus for this weeks CAWD project is Sound Design.
Here is a quick 10 minute clip from Vice we will watch to look at one of the CAWD careers possible once you enter the real world.
Next we are going to practice. First, with a quick clip from Animal Crossing!
In today’s example files you will find a file called “animalCrossing.mp4”. I want you to bring this file into Premiere and setup with a minimum of 3 sound effects that you will download from the internet – likely from FreeSound.org – or from any other sound effect website.
I want sounds in the following 3 places:
- Chopping of the tree.
- Chopping of the rock.
- Dropping the leaf to conjure the stool.
When complete we are going to export this file as “(lastName)AnimalCrossingSoundDesign.mp4”.
When complete please place a copy of your MP4 into the “animalCrossing” folder on the Public. I would love to show some to the class before we pivot to our CAWD Project.
This may bleed into after break, and that is ok. We will go with the flow.
10:35 Morning Outside Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minutes outside / just out our door.
- Throw the Frisbee, toss the football, kick the kickball, or just get some Vitamin D and not be at a desk.
10:45 Week 6 CAWD Project: Sound Design
This week you will work as a Sound Designer.
Inside the folder called “soundDesignStartHere” you will find (4) 40 second or so clips from video game trailers. There is no audio. It is up to you to pick a trailer, and Sound Design it.
You will download sound effects and background music to complete the trailer. You will not do anything to the video. Any sound effect you can get from the internet (and into Premiere) is fine to use.
You will get portions of Today, Thursday, and Friday to work on this. When complete you will export your file as “(lastName)SoundDesign.mp4” at 720p. My example file name:
- “croninSoundDesign.mp4”
First we will watch the clips together. While we watch I want you thinking of the different sounds that could match up with the visuals you see.
Once we finish watching, you will begin by selecting the single trailer you wish to Sound Design for.
Save this trailer into your “week_06” folder, and begin!
