Class Hours: 9:40 – 2:05
Mr. Cronin
Notes
- Welcome to Day 2!
- Welcome to September! (Everyone say Rabbit 3 times)
- Some of us put their computers to sleep at the end of the day. Please turn machines off each night using the on screen button so all updates are applied when they need to be.
- Welcome to Thursday!
- Today we have our first English class with Mrs. McCadden. The English teacher comes to us on Thursday and Friday’s from 10:45-11:35 to deliver the English curriculum (and credit).
- Today is a “Blue” day for CTE academics, and a “B” day for EHS.
- Kids with “Blue” CTE classes need to be in that class at 12:45. You do not return from lunch.
- Kids with “B” EHS classes will leave at 1:10 when we go to break.
- Kids with PE it is only period 8, so you will leave at 1:10 and be in your classroom at 1:15.
- When you leave make sure to clean your station and turn machine off. Yesterday everyone did great!
- Today we will start our Articles – short readings at the start of the day and after lunch. Going forward this is how we are going to start our day, and return from lunch. Follow along with the article, and then I am going to call on 3 students to give me:
- A fact from the article
- A fact from the article
- A question the article makes you think about that wasn’t answered in the article
- The CTE Chemistry class room as changed! It is going to be in the Rink in room R208. Please make a note in your calendars. This will impact Phillip and and Brodey.
- Remember those videos in yesterday’s Dayplan that show you how to get to the different class locations. Watch at break or lunch if unclear, and you can always ask questions.
9:40 Attendance and Article
9:45 One of Mr. Cronin’s summer projects: Digital Photo class
I wanted to share some of the work that I did this summer as we get to know each other. CAWD2 now offers a 3 college credit Digital Photography class. To bone up on my skills I took the class as well.
10:00 Student Handbook / Agreement
- The page that explains it.
- A direct link.
- Main ideas:
- No bullying and harassment, anywhere. Remember that what you do online at home can have implications at school if the drama comes into school. The handbook has details on reporting and policies. You can always come to me / email me, even if the issue isn’t about CAWD students. Imagine your little brother, sister, or other family getting bullied at school. Even if you don’t know the kid – say something (even anonymously) so we can stop it. And for CAWD – just be good people.
- Obviously the best plan is standing up for people at the time it is happening. Often bullies are pretty weak people and if you punch them in the nose (figuratively – by standing up to them) they will run off.
- No drugs, alcohol, smoking, vaping, in school. Do I really need to go over this?
- No fighting / No weapons at school.
- No VPN’s. Anything you do (like use a VPN) that either damages the computers and software, OR goes around the security (like that VPN) will get you in trouble.
- No installing software not approved by Mr. Cronin. If you install GTA and are doing “missions” on a school computer … I can’t help you if suspended / expelled.
- Hey – here’s an idea. Don’t use that VPN.
We are ALL going to sign a piece of paper that accepts the student handbook tomorrow – Friday. You and your family have tonight to read the handbook online (or take a physical copy if you would like). This is your homework for tonight. Tomorrow you will all sign that you have read and agree to it – so make sure you read it.
If you don’t sign this piece of paper that means you can’t use EWSD computers. Look around – how would you do CAWD without a computer.
Get comfortable with it tonight!
10:10 Earning College Credit in CAWD / Certification Exam
If during the first semester of CAWD you demonstrate that you can meet out deadlines with quality work product, you will be given the chance to earn 3 college credits in “Website Development” (CIS – 1151) through the Vermont State College system. The have looked at our high school curriculum and determined that it is worthy of college credit. Plan on doing well this semester if you are interested in this opportunity!
All students will be sitting for the Web Designer certification exam in early June through the Web Professionals organization. This is an Industry Recognized Credential (IRC) which you can place on your resume to apply to college, use to gain employment, etc. We pay for it. If you pass – hurray! If you fail – not the end of the world (you can try again if accepted into CAWD2).
All we ask is you try your best.
More on both of these as we move through the year – but start working hard now!
10:25 Evacuation / Fire Drill Practice
- Each month we will have a safety drill – in September we have TWO drills. Try to contain your excitement, please.
- When the fire alarm goes off / or we are evacuating due to power outage, etc, we are all going to go to the same rally location as a class.
- I have to take and hand in attendance outside – and they start contacting families of missing students immediately, so you can’t drift amongst other kids, we have to stay together. Stick together.
- Today we are going to walk out to the CAWD location so we are comfortable with the process for the drill next Thursday, or if we happen to have a fire drill today. (For some reason a lot of people can’t seem to master toasting a bagel in the cafeteria, so it happens more than you think.)
- I will walk you back in and show you a door that you can’t open (but I can) and if you hustle after drills you can come with me.
10:35 Morning Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minutes break – you have to exit the room.
- When the door near the TV is open, you are welcome to come back in.
- For the first week of school we are going to keep the CAWD room open for breaks.
10:45 English
11:35 Photoshop Intro / Review
- Essentials vs. Graphic and Web (Typography) layouts.
- What is an Adjustment?
- Using masks to hide and show portions of your adjustment.
- Text tool
- Saving as both a .psd and a .jpg.
Building off of this I want everyone to find an image of their hometown (bigger the better) from the internet and save it to their “week_01” folder in their Documents folder.
Do at least one adjustment work to improve the image. Feel free to use multiple adjustments. Don’t go overboard and deep fry it.
Using the text tool I want you to write the name of the town you are from. Make it big enough to read, and select colors and composition so its legible.
When complete save your file PSD file, and then save a copy as a jpg. Both called “(lastName)”.
So file names would be:
- “cronin.psd”
- … and …
- “cronin.jpg”
Inside the CAWD public drive you will find a folder called “hometowns”. Place a copy of the jpg into this folder. At 12:02 we are going to turn our monitors off and present, getting to know where many of us are from.
My original image for Underhill.
My completed version:
12:07 Lunch (30 Minutes)
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.
Slightly early, normal lunch times starting tomorrow.
12:45 Attendance and Article
12:50 Finish the micro story..
Everyone will craft a micro story based on the prompt of:
An old bar of soap’s last thoughts as it is being absorbed into another bar of soap.
Use this Character Counter website to type into. Everyone in the room is limited to 600 characters for their story.
At 1:20 after break I would love to hear presentations from at least 3 students.
This will practice being creative under a set of constraints (both the subject and length), as well as presenting your work.
Here is my story:
So this is it I guess. Just a little while ago I was a new, fresh bar of soap dumped from a cardboard box. No hairs stuck to me, no dents in my appearance, my body not washed down the drain. When I arrived I saw the last remints of who I replaced, and I am fast approaching that existence. My own replacement has moved in and is sitting on top of me. I am now ignored in the shower, and each time my replacement is placed back down they are pressed upon me, and I am losing my independent shape. I am being absorbed into what is next, and I can’t do anything about it.
Mr. Cronin
600 characters is the maximum you have for this – edit yourself down.
Tip – there is no saving here, so copy and paste as backup if you accidently navigate away from the page.
1:10 Afternoon Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minutes break – you have to exit the room.
- When the door near the TV is open, you are welcome to come back in.
- For the first week of school we are going to keep the CAWD room open for breaks.
1:20 Story Sharing!
3 people – c’mon, you can do this!
1:30 Photoshop
This afternoon we are going to continue getting practice with Photoshop and the text tool.
In Photoshop create a new document at 1280 x 720 pixels (720p).
Let’s be edgy and use a black background. Use the paint bucket.
Using white text I want you to build the phrase with the words above. Layout and font are up to you.
We are going to save our file twice when we are complete. We will save as a PSD, and save a copy as a jpg. Call each “(lastName)Eyes”.
So file names would be:
- “croninEyes.psd”
- … and …
- “croninEyes.jpg”
By 1:50 place a copy of your jpg into the folder on the public called “realEyes“. I am going to spin through these at 1:50 once all computers are off and present our work to the class before dismissal.
Hit the 1:50 deadline! Deadlines are crucial in our industries.
When complete turn your machine off and make your station clean.
1:50 Dailies / Presentation of Real Eyes
1:55 Dismissal
Typically I let you go at 2:05, but to get everyone comfortable we are all going to walk down together to where the busses are. We will do this Wednesday and Thursday.
Please be quiet in the halls – remember that EHS still has class until 2:35!
Don’t dilly dally getting to the busses, right when we are dismissed for the day you need to get to them, as they will leave. And they will leave…
If you have a car (get a parking pass) you don’t have to come with us to the busses.
