Class Hours: 9:40 – 2:05
Mr. Cronin
Notes
- Tuesday! Remember that tomorrow is WorkKeys Day. Let’s take a minute to review this now.
- Jerry! 10:30-11 meeting today in conference room with Ms. Chase regarding filmming for Thursday.
- Due to EHS testing, I readjusted the scheduled today a bit. Same events, different order, I just would rather have students miss critiques than lessons.
- Congrats to Ryan for winning $500 for 1st place in the “Distracted Driving Animation” – see it on the Insta.
- Congrats to Ryan for winning $1000 for the NTHS scholarship. This is randomly drawn, so long as you are in NTHS. I heard some say “pssssaw, we won’t win, what’s the post of entering“. Ryan now has an extra $1000 for the summer. Take advantage of opportunities!
- Ryan is attending RIT in the fall.
- We are filming in the AM in CAWD on Thursday – most of you will just be working, they are coming to film and talk to Jerry. Anything we can’t film at the start of class on Thursday we will get at 1pm. So be ready to just come in and quietly get to work on Thursday.
9:40 Attendance and Article
9:45 Critiques
Today Mimi will be giving Constructive Criticism. Pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
Remember that Constructive Criticism can sometimes be subjective… on art which is also subjective. You don’t have to agree with the Constructive Criticism, but you have to hear it without getting defensive.
10:35 Morning Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minute break – you have to exit the room.
- When the door near the TV is open, you are welcome to come back in.
10:45 Web Design
When setting up a live web site you need to get web hosting (or run your own server).
- Hosting
- Domains
- Temporary variables (like our Mad Libs) vs. long term storage (like Social Media posts that persist when the browser is closed)
- Web Databases stored on the hosting
- MySQL
- MariaDB
- PHP
- PHP is a language that runs on web servers, and allows HTML/JS to talk to and store information on web servers.
- FTP
- File Transfer Protocol is a way that we can move files from our computer to the web hosting servers online.
11:20 CAWD Project: Hosting for your business
This week we are going to research and outline the cost and procedure to setup your first live website. While we won’t actually do this (it costs money) it will give you the steps you would go through to do this in production. If in the summer you wish to start your own business, you will know what to do and the anticipated costs.
We are also going to push the entrepreneurial aspect to business – you have to choose a skill that you have learned in CAWD to monetize. Let’s say that July 1st you start your own business. You could be a:
- 3D asset creator
- Web Designer
- Graphic Designer
- Photographer / Post production artist
- Game Designer
- Etc
You will pick a role and outline the steps to create this live website.
Requirements
You will create a 4 page website. This website will create your first business, talk about how it will get online, and show samples of your work.
- Business Name (index.html)
- What is the name of your business?
- What are your services?
- How are you going to make money? How do you monetize your skills?
- What would your rates be? For example if you are going to be an asset creator, go to TurboSquid and take a look at what the costs per item are. Don’t charge 33 Million dollars per item. Think about how much is reasonable for a high school student.
- Hosting
- Which web hosting did you pick?
- Why did you pick this web hosting? Compare the stats of the hosting vs. your needs.
- What is the cost per month?
- Link to the specific hosting plan.
- Domain
- Which domain did you pick?
- What is the cost? Is it per year?
- Link to the specific domain showing that it is available, or a printscreen.
- Work Samples
- Give imagery of 3 of your samples of work in discipline. If going to be a 3D modeler, give us 3 sample renders. If going to be an animator, give us 3 sample animations (hosted in YouTube? <video> tag?). If going to be a web designer, give us 3 websites (screenshots fine). If going to be a Game Designer, give us 3 samples of your Game Design / Art work.
- Make it consistent in your sizing.
Create a folder called “hosting” inside of our “week_34” folders.
As always for our web design projects going forward if going for the A:
- Use only Sans Serif Font. The specific font is up to you, but sans serif fonts have been proven to be easier to read on digital screens.
- Follow Responsive Web Design Best Practices – the D20 will be rolled. No horizontal scroll bars!
- We are going to run a random page through WAVE web accessibility tool. You can’t have errors, contrast errors, or a heading warning.
11:35 Study Guide
Show me the passphrase and move on with CAWD work.
12:15 Lunch (30 Minutes)
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.
