10:45 Skills Introduction
SkillsUSA is a United States career and technical student organization serving more than 395,000 high school, college and middle school students and professional members enrolled in training programs in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.
CAWD takes part in these Design Competitions as a way to bring real world learning (and judging) to the classroom. The work that you produce will be assessed by professionals.
Last year CAWD took the Gold Medal in all 3 of the Vermont Design Competitions, and at nationals placed:
- 4th place in 3D Animation (team of 2 CAWD students)
- 7th place in Game Design (team of 2 CAWD students)
- 11th place in Web Design (team of 2 CAWD2 students)
In the third quarter we will spend Thursday and Friday morning around English working toward 1 of 3 SkillsUSA Design Competitions. All CAWD students will take part in one of the 3 CAWD related design competitions in teams of 2 (you make your own teams). Students will choose to work in the following disciplines:
- Create a Video Game concept in Unreal or Unity
- Create a prototype / sample
- Pitch to the judges event – including game play – in early April
- I recommend a Developer (who wants to figure out issues) and an Artist
- VR is an option for those that want to be thrown in the deep end
- Prepare and practice for the skills of a Web Designer
- Sit for the Vermont Web Design competition in early April
- One day practical event – winner takes all
- I recommend a Developer and a Designer
- Prepare and practice the skills of a 3D Animator
- Sit for the Vermont Animation competition in early April
- One day practical event – winner takes all
- I recommend a Lead Animator and a Creative Director
First – you have to talk with each other and figure out your teams.
You do not have to say “yes” to the first person that asks you if you have a different partner in mind, or a different competition in mind.
The first thing we are going to do is have a speed “dating” mixer where every minute or so we will rotate around the class and talk to some people that may be interested in the same competition you are.
11:05 Skills Team Building & Competition Selection
Tomorrow we will start our progress on our Design competitions. Today we need to know the teams and the competitions you wish to pursue during the 3rd quarter. You and your partner will be locked in after we figure out our teams this morning.
This may get a bit messy and awkward, but we are going to do our best to match students up with a topic they are interested in first, and then socialization / friend aspects afterward. We have had some great great teams formed with people that just met each other. We have had some terrible (I mean really bad) teams formed out of best friends. There are a lot of accolades that could come from these Design Competitions. Working with your best friend could be a terrible mistake.
Don’t rush through this process.
Once you have told me your team and discipline you are to use the remainder of the AM for production.
12:15 Lunch (30 Minutes)
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

12:50 A Gentleman in Moscow
- Follow along as I read; lose yourself in a story for a bit.
- One of the strengths of this book are “beautifully rendered scenes“. You will be creating art based off of the text. Listen attentively.
1:10 Afternoon Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minute break – you have to exit the room.
- When the door near the TV is open, you are welcome to come back in.
