10:45 12 Principles of Animation
Disney’s twelve basic principles of animation were introduced by the Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas in their 1981 book The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation. The principles are based on the work of Disney animators from the 1930s onwards, in their quest to produce more realistic animation.
Today we are going to introduce one of the easiest principles to pick up and apply – Exaggeration.
When you are animating this week, have the principle of exaggeration at the forefront of your work. Whatever motion you think is “good enough” – do it even more than that.
10:50 CAWD Project: Andy and Oli Animation
This weeks CAWD project will be to create a character animation with Andy and Oli.
The story can be up to you, but the two characters need to be doing something together. Some options include:
- Fight scene
- Dance
- Tag / race through scene
- etc
Workflow:
Part 1:
Model your two characters.
Part 2:
Create a 2 page storyboard (minimum of 8 cells) with what will happen in your animation. Each cell should show the camera angle you plan to use, include the description, duration, and other descriptive elements. No sounds for this project – sound can be left blank. The more detailed and developed your storyboard, the more professional your work, the better your brand, the better your grade.
You are required to use at least 3 different camera shots, and these should be reflected in the storyboard cells when you draw. Use any resource as a guide, but here is one that works:
Scan and upload these two files as:
- “(lastName)SB1.jpg”
- “(lastName)SB2.jpg”
I need to check you off with your images scanned on on your machine before you can move onto Part 3, the actual animation creation. I just need to it “done”, but remember that it is a component of the overall grade, so it can be “done” and “terrible” at the same time.
Part 3:
Create the animation. I recommend using different Blender files for each shot, so you have granular control and what happens in one scene doesn’t impact another scene negatively. You could do the entire animation in one file, this is up to you. You will have to build your own professional workflow. Which method do you prefer?
Create a 720p sequence in Premiere, and edit together. Remember – no sound.
Export final animation as “(lastName)AndyOli.mp4”.
Overview on deliverables:
- “(lastName)SB1.jpg” – Storyboard page 1
- “(lastName)SB2.jpg”– Storyboard page 2
- “(lastName)AndyOli.mp4” – the animation
