11:00 Critiques
Each week we will upload our work on Monday as a class. I will then present your work to the class. Every week we will pick a new student to proactive giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
Today Braden will give Constructive Criticism.
11:20 4th Quarter Traditional Life Focus: Portraits

2nd Quarter – 1, 2 and 3 point perspective.Everyone has at least 1 piece that can use for college admission, scholarships, etc.3rd Quarter – Still Life’s- 4th Quarter – Portraits
Methods:
We will also be trying out different learning methods over the year. The goal is that you become a better independent learner.
2nd Quarter – 1, 2 and 3 point perspective. Direct instruction through Cronin / CAWD. Draw what I draw first.3rd Quarter – YouTube tutorials that I select for you. Watch and create.- 4th Quarter – You are on your own to learn that week about the topic I give you. You can use YouTube tutorials, websites, AI – etc. On your own you are going to learn and and practice:
- human face proportions and ratios
- drawing the elements of the face
- getting the reps in, practice practice practice, and while you may not be the best artist in the room, I guarantee if you try hard you will improve.
DH31: Baseline Portrait
In this first week we are going to get a baseline of your skills to compare to.
We will compare this baseline portrait to your final portrait to see your growth.
What is a portrait sketch?
A portrait sketch is a drawing that captures the likeness, personality, and mood of a person. Typically done using pencils, charcoal, or other sketching materials, it focuses primarily on the subject’s face and expression, although it may also include some details of the upper body.
This week you are going to create your baseline portrait sketch. Do your best and create a portrait that includes:
- A human from the shoulders / neck up
- Realism as a design style
- Shading

2:20 Dailies
2:25 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:44 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
