11:00 Critiques
Each week we will upload our work on Monday as a class. I will then present your work to the class. Every week we will pick a new student to proactive giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
Today Jace will give Constructive Criticism.
Tomorrow Otto will.
11:30 Week 14 Pin Design Work
If you are on the Pin Design track, this weeks agency project will be take your 4 pack of concept art sketches, and pick which one you think will do the best in the Design Competition and create your first draft in Illustrator.
Remember that this is practical art – not fine art. I really don’t care which design you have that speaks to your soul of an artist, what we care about here is finding a way to monetize your skills and get a comfortable career. That means you have to have people like your designs, vote for you, want to pay you, etc.
In Illustrator start our with a 1000px by 1000px canvas and create your pin. Place your imagery in as a reference, or create freehand. Make sure that you are including the following text in your design:
- SkillsUSA
- Vermont
- 2023-24
Save your file as lastNamePin_V1.jpg for grading (and obviously the AI file to work on this month).
If you are not doing the Pin Design track, do an agency as normal.
11:40 Drawing Content
- Drawing buildings in 2 point perspective
12:15 DH14: Architectural Drawing in 2 Point Perspective
For DH14 I want you to draw an architectural drawing in 2 Point Perspective. Buildings, straight lines, really push the idea that all design elements are connected to the 2 vanishing points.
These skills should start showing up in all your concept art going forward!
Save your file as lastNameDH14.jpg.
12:25 Lunch
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

2:20 Dailies
2:25 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:44 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
