11:00 Critiques
Each week we will upload our work on Monday as a class. I will then present your work to the class. Every week we will pick a new student to proactive giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
Today Toby will give Constructive Criticism. Tomorrow Mia will.
11:30 DH 18 2nd Draft (Final) Summative perspective sketch (for portfolio)
This week you will complete the second half of your Final Summative Perspective sketch.
You will turn in this week both your 1st draft AND final draft, and we will put the before/after up on the screen to gauge progress.
Filenames to turn in:
- (lastName)DH17Draft.jpg – what you did last week, nothing to “do” here.
- (lastName)DH18FinalPerspective.jpg work product from this week.
11:35 Capstone
As you know the final 2 weeks of the semester are going to be working on your capstone. I don’t tell you what to do on this project, you decide the medium, you demonstrate your skills the best you can.
- Use the pitch as your guide
- This is your final audition for SkillsUSA partnering
- You are being assessed on the full production, including:
- Story (is it a good story) / storytelling (was it told well)
- Animation skills artistic – camera angles, timing, animation exaggeration (and other principles), etc. Does it have the “look” you were going for?
- Sound Design
- Animation skills technical – shot length, clipping issues, quality of animation labor
For Week 18 save your draft animation as (lastName)SummativeAnimationDraft.mp4. This will be the first half of your work product.
- Use the pitch as your guide
- This is your final audition for SkillsUSA partnering (I think I heard that somewhere before…)
- You are being assed on the full production, including:
- Lore – why are we doing this? How do you explain it?
- Game Art
- Programming – everything that we have done in class should really show up in one way or another. (titles, interactive elements, different levels, menus, etc)
- Presentation – what you create in OBS can be sound designed if need be in Premiere (kinda cheating, but they do it all the time in the industry).
For Week 18 work and save, and then to demonstrate your first draft create an OBS recording (good centering, big) as (lastName)SummativeGameDraft.mp4. This will be the first half of your work product.
You get to choose your focus – Animation or Game Design.
What you DO over the next 2 weeks really should inform which Design Competition, College, and career you are thinking about.

2:20 Dailies
2:25 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:44 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
