Class Hours: 9:40 – 2:05
Mr. Cronin
Notes
- Happy Monday! We are in Week 10! We are in the second quarter! Forget about Q1 grades and projects, they are locked in stone. Let’s create our “week_10” folders now. All about Q2 and beyond…
- This week we will have a couple differences:
- Wednesday – CTE T-shirt assembly.
- Thursday – New Seats – we have to decide…. Let’s discuss.
- Friday – Early lunch due to EHS having no school due to conferences. From our Transportation Director:
- Essex High School will be having In-Service this Friday, November 3, 2023. I’m working with Hunter Eddy, EWSD Transportation Director and we are trying to find out what Essex High School students are in need of transportation on this day. Would you please ask your program students who live in either Georgia, Westford, Islands, Essex Town or the Village if they need this service?
- If you could send me the names of students who do need transportation on Friday I can take it from there. If I could have your list by the end of the day today that would be greatly appreciated.
- Let me know by the end of the day please!

11:00 Critiques
Each week we will upload our work on Monday as a class. I will then present your work to the class. Every week we will pick a new student to proactive giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
Today Otto will give Constructive Criticism.
Tomorrow Gabby will.
11:30 Storyboarding Intro
This morning we are going to storyboard an animation around a subject we are all familiar with – taking attendance in CAWD. We will start by taping in Storyboard paper into our sketchbooks for DH10.
Take:
- 2 sheets for for this mornings exercise (that you will turn in)
- 2 sheets for DH10 (and tape into your sketchbook)
12:15 Character Selection for Part 2 of Week 10 CAWD Project
Tomorrow we are going to get our CAWD project regarding Floating Droid character modeling. As you can guess, you are obviously going to model your own character as Part 1.
Part 2 you are going to select from the rest of the classes characters as your second droid. You are going to select their concept art and place in your Week 10 folder to use as a blueprint / reference image when modeling. When we present your work next week we are going to compare your modeling to what the Concept Art is for the character you select.
Let’s lets look through the options, and everyone will select now the other floating droid character.
Think about your character, and the story that you are going to create with the other character. Let the designs of your characters help drive a logical story. Only when you know each floating droid in your animation, can you create your story, so you can create your Storyboard for DH10!
12:20 DH10: 2 Character Storyboard
Now that you have your two main characters (your floating droid, the droid you have selected), you need to come up with your story for your animation.
At a minimum your story must have both characters, and needs follow the basic recipe (Story Arc):
- Introduction (Establish your scene, intro your characters, what is the basis for what is going on)
- Rising Action (What happens? Fight, kiss, something explodes, rocket takes off, etc)
- Conclusion (What is the satisfying conclusion to the Rising Action.)
You will fill out 2 full storyboard sheets (at a minimum) with your story. If you want to be eligible for the “A”:
- Come up with a visually interesting story that uses different camera angles.
- Create high quality art using 2 characters and scene.
- Fill out everything on the storyboard paper.
- Be reading to tell us 3 elements of your story (Introduction / Rising Action / Conclusion) when we present your work.
Save your files as:
- (lastName)DH10_1.jpg (first sheet, 4 full cells)
- (lastName)DH10_2.jpg (second sheet, 4 full cells)
- (lastName)DH10_3.jpg, etc if you use more paper…
12:25 Lunch
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

2:20 Dailies
2:25 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:44 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
