10:10 Collectable, range, and functional Game Mechanic

Today you are going to start personalizing the lessons we learned this week regarding collectables, game instances, and giving us the ability to have our game mechanic function.

What we did as a class:

  • Collect 3 coins – this allows the gate to function
  • Store this data in our Game Instance
  • Once we have collected the 3 coins – get close enough to the gate to use “E” and function
  • Move past the obstacle

What you are going to do is put your own spin through art on your idea. You ALREADY made the obstacle, it already works with a range function, now you are going to build in some sort of collectable that must be … collected to enable the game mechanic.

Some examples based on what we saw from class:

  • Jace – could he create some sort of circular medallion that mimics the shape of the door so the player realizes he must collect these to enable the door.
  • Isaac – could we create a duck statue like the Maltese Falcon, and you must find these scattered around the level before we can use the giant gold idol?
  • Tobi – access cards for the blast door (did this)
  • Gabby – book to access hidden part of library (doing this)
  • etc

Start personalizing to your art style. In about a month we are going to pair up to work on one of 3 design competitions, Game Design, Animation, or Web Design. We are talking about finding a career in what we love to do – therefore your work needs to make people want to work with you.

Impress your classmates

Do your work, and record in OBS so we can see your collectables as well as the functioning of your mechanic.

Really do a good job creating a BIG recording, with your art centered, to show off your work. Your .mp4 is all we (and your creative team, colleges, employers) will see of this project right now – make it look great.

Save your file as (lastName)CollectableMechanic.mp4.

2:25 “19 Minutes”

4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:

  • Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
  • Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
  • Unplug

At 2:44 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.

2:45 Dismissal
