10:10 Week 21 Skills Production
Thursday and Friday we will have time for SkillsUSA production. We are going to get into more and more team based work where you need to practice working together. Practicing teamwork is crucial for developing a range of skills – from problem-solving and communication to responsibility and adaptability – all of which are essential for success in both professional and personal spheres – as well as State Design Competitions in CAWD!
As a team create a single animation that demonstrates the classic story of the Titanic sinking on its maiden voyage. In short:
- Titanic leaves port in England
- Traveling at night it hits iceberg
- Classic Titanic sinking scene with half the ship up in the air
- Closing shot with just lifeboats on the water
Do you want to explore the ocean modifier?
Think about different and interesting camera angles you can use to show and sell your story. Get a low angle of the ship to make it feel immense. Get an interesting shot of the iceberg hitting the hull, with camera shake maybe, to really push the idea of IMPACT. You are the visual storytellers, sell it.
The most important element of this project is completing it by 12:25 on Friday. This is meant to squeeze you and your partner.
- You won’t be able to model as much as you want (stylized, low poly, cartoon is ok)
- You won’t get as much render time as you want (you need to learn to master Cycles samples or learn to make Eevee pretty)
- You won’t have as much time to edit as you want
- No sound – typically at nationals there is no sound.
Place your file in your team folder as “lastNamelastNameTitanic.mp4“, rendered out at 720p. Full credit only to the teams that render correctly.
Situation Report:
We have our initial GDD / STOT / Mood Board. We know where we want to go – even if we don’t know how to get there yet, and that OK after week 1, but now we kick it into production.
Our schedule:
Jan 25, 26 – GDD / STOT / Mood Board- Feb 1,2 – Work and document with Alpha testing as our next deliverable.
- Feb 8,9 – Work and document with Alpha testing as our next deliverable.
- Feb 15,16 – Alpha Testing and Feedback. This is an early test, conducted after the development phase but before Beta testing. It’s considered a form of internal acceptance testing. Mr. Cronin will play each of your games on Friday the 16th. I must have a playable character to “be”, a world to interact in, and a reason to do what we are doing.
- Feb 22, 23 – Work and document with Beta Testing as our next deliverable.
- March 7,8 – Work and document with Beta Testing as our next deliverable.
- March 14,15 – Beta Testing and Feedback. Mr. Cronin will play each of your games on the 15th. You must have all that you had in Alpha testing, now with sound, a complete 1st level, UI elements, and an achievable goal. This is your MVP – or Minimum Viable Product to pitch to the judges. If the judges walked in the door we should be able to sell our game to them this week.
- March 21, 22 – Create Game Trailer for judging (OBS + Premiere + Sound Design)
- March 28, 29 – Create and practice 10 minute presentation for juding.
- Thursday April 4th – Vermont State Design Competitions!
At this point – teams are going in all sorts of different directions. Some are VR, some are FPS, some are top down, some are, some are, etc.
You are going to create your team folder and document what you have done. Make it as easy as possible for me to learn what you have done through file names, through notes put on images, etc. You are working in a 2 week sprint right now to get to the Alpha Testing and Feedback stage. It is up to your team to impress me with progress and documentation of this weeks work by 12:25 Friday.
The FIRST thing that you and your partner need to do is have a conversation on who needs to do what to get to arrive at Alpha Testing successfully!
See Mr. Bohmann’s CAWD2 Dayplan.

Skills work due tomorrow at 12:25!
2:20 Dailies
2:25 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:44 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
