You will go to break directly from the drill.
10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minute break – you have to exit the room.
- When the door near the TV is open, you are welcome to come back in.
11:00 Critiques
Each week we will upload our work on Monday as a class. I will then present your work to the class. Every week we will pick a new student to proactive giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
Today Megan will give Constructive Criticism. (I think we can get 2 projects done in 1 round of Critiques)
11:30 DH36: Final Portrait
In our Final Design Homework of the year, we are going you to ask to create a final portrait sketch. The persona you sketch is up to you.
If considering sketching friend / someone pop culture that people know, note that this could make your life harder than doing a Generic Gerald.
Sign and date, call your work lastNameDH36.jpg.
For Critiques we also want you to include your baseline portrait (lastNameDH31.jpg) so we can see your growth.
If at the end of your final sketch, you don’t see improvement, continue to refine your final sketch until you do.
We will present both images, your before and your after.
Your improvement will drive your Final Design Homework grade for the year.
11:40 2024 CAWD Passion Project!!!
To end our year in CAWD we are going to work on our CAWD Passion Project. In this two week deliverable I want you to take inspiration from the area of CAWD that you enjoyed most, that you find yourself drawn to as a career or hobby down the road.
You will sink your teeth into this topic for the next 2 weeks and hopefully create something Portfolio worthy, as well as help you think about what is next – next week, next year, in 5 years.
What are some options?
- 3D Modeling – dive deep into a detailed model pack, scene, or character.
- Video game environment design – create a world to explore.
- Web programming (create JS inspired game like Cookie Clicker)
- Character Animation – practice giving emotions to pixels.
- New tool study – does 3D Sculpting in Blender seem interesting?
- 2D animation or artwork – digitally paint an epic scene or animation?
- Game Jam – you have 2 weeks. Sprint to make a basic game.
- Game Design – if thinking of Champlain College for example one of their requirements for application consideration is a board game. Take the next 2 weeks and build that board game, document, create artwork, do user testing, etc.
- Traditional Art – if the goal is art school after high school, let’s go to that colleges portfolio requirements and work on samples that connect to what you have to do anyway. This is Brennan’s Cal Arts Sketchbook he had to do for … Cal Arts. Solid stuff.
- Typography – use text to create imagery in a stylized way.
- Etc – I am pretty flexible. CAWD awards high school credits in Art, Technology, and English. Let’s find something that we can have under our umbrella.
Start working today on whatever your gut tells you.
I am going to come around Wednesday at 11:00 and get your topics. I like to give you 24 hours to mull it over once you start, but once you pick tomorrow you are locked in. We just don’t want to have student’s topic shopping over and over and after the Passion Project have little complete.
11:55 Study Guide
12:25 Lunch
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.
12:55 Attendance and Article
1:00 Steve Jobs Biography
Read along with Mr. Cronin. Improve literacy, word decoding, enjoy a nice story, and unplug from the world.
1:20 Afternoon Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minute break – you have to exit the room.
- When the door near the TV is open, you are welcome to come back in.
1:30 Afternoon Practice & Production
- Passion Project Draft
- Create a folder called “passionDraft” inside your Week 36 folder. You will choose what you wish to present. I would recommend 2-5 assets showing off your first draft work that could be:
- WIP’s
- OBS recordings of the process
- What didn’t work and you are pivoting away from
- etc

- Remember that DH36 will be a before / after presentation.
2:20 Dailies
2:25 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:44 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
