11:00 Critiques
Each week we will upload our work on Monday as a class. I will then present your work to the class. Every week we will pick a new student to proactive giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
Today Braden will give Constructive Criticism.
11:30 Halloween Partner Work
This week we are going to lean into Halloween – one of the most visually interesting and fun events of the year. You are going to work in partners.
Theme
For all projects you will use a Halloween themed art style. Your group will choose from:
- Genuinlely scarry
- Campy
- … just like our Design Homework this week.
You and your partner are going to decide today; once you make your decision you have to stick with it.
Your team is going to pick one of two career roles to focus on this week:
Option 1: Level designers with interactive mechanic
If your team selects this option you will work in Unreal to create a Halloween themed, interactive game element. You will create art elements in Blender to bring into Unreal. You will be combining art and interactivity.
You are not creating an entire level. You are creating an interactive game element, and how hard you push yourself to tinker and learn new code (as well as apply what we already have learned) will lead to your grade. Game art and interactive elements are the key this week.
You will record the game footage with OBS and bring into Premiere to Sound Design.
Some possible examples:
- Haunted Mansion gate that opens and closed when “used” (E)
- Graveyard with lampposts that turn on / off when “used” (E)
- Crypt with fire effects that turn on / off when “used” (E – but it could be any key for all of these)
If you choose this option the first information I need is:
- What is your art style?
- Who is lead Game Asset creator?
- Who is lead programmer?
- What is the interactive element you are going to create?
As a final product you will create a sound designed trailer called (lastName)(lastName)HalloweenGame.mp4.
Option 2: Animator with sound designer
Create a halloween themed character animation. This animation must be sound designed.
You can use Andy, or you can create some custom Halloween themed characters (don’t use our floating droids from DH8, that is next week). Just remember that this is not a character modeling project – it is a character animation project.
If you choose this option the first information I need is:
- What is your art style?
- What is your story in 1 sentence?
- Who is the Creative Director for the animation?
- Who is the animation editor and Sound Designer?
As a final product you will create a sound designed trailer called (lastName)(lastName)HalloweenAnimation.mp4.

2:20 Dailies
2:25 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:44 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
