11:00 Critiques
Each week we will upload our work on Monday as a class. I will then present your work to the class. Every week we will pick a new student to proactive giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
Today Ben will give Constructive Criticism.
11:30 Week 4 Partner Farm Animation & Game Level
The CAWD Project this week will be a partner based project. In groups of two students, one partner will act as an animator in Blender, and one will act as a level designer in Unreal.
You and your partner choose your roles. Groups:
- Peyton / Scotty
- Sapan / Aiden
- Gabby / Tobi
- Megan / Otto
- Dylan / Mia
- Zander / Jace
- Phoenix / Elizabeth
- Connie / Lee
- Sam / Braden
- Ben / Tennyson
- Isaac / Alex
While you are working on separate deliverables, your team grade will be an average of both your work. It is important that you are helping each other so that both partners earn the “A” so when you average an “A” and an “A” you get … the “A”.
If one partner gets an “A” and lets the other sink by ignoring them, not communicating, not collaborating, than that partner may get an “A”, with their partner getting a “D”, a the average is a “B-“. Grades count when applying to College and CAWD2, you want to build as good a brand for yourself as you can.
Step 1
- Get together with your partner and show off your assets and concept art.
- Decide what you can use / will use
- Decide what else you need to create to build a complete farm scene
- Decide if you are going realistic or stylized
- Start creating the other supplemental assets
Work with your partner to to model as many assets as you can. Frequently check in with your partner to answer each others questions. It will be faster to help each other than to go through me all the time, as I have to help the entire class.
Step 2 Creating the final products
The Animator (one of you)
- Create the Farm scene in Blender using assets from both partners
- Create a short animation simply with the camera moving through the scene
- Slower the better, with a minimum of 20 seconds in length.
- Call your file (lastName)(lastName)FarmAnimation.mp4
The Level Designer (the other one)
- Create the Farm scene in Unreal using assets from both partners
- Create a short screen cap using OBS (you will learn about this tomorrow) with the 3rd person character moving through the scene
- Show off what you created, with a minimum of 20 seconds in length.
- Call your file (lastName)(lastName)FarmGameEnvironment.mp4
You should be in constant communication while working with your partner.
If you are a “hi and bye” working relationship with your partner you will do poorly, and others in the class will start to see that you don’t work well in teams, and you will be avoided. Let me tell you a story …
If you lean in to working collaboratively, practicing’s it even if you aren’t amazing yet, you will create a personal brand of someone that people like to work with. Build your brand now. Let me tell you a story …
12:25 Lunch

2:20 Dailies
2:25 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:44 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
