11:00 Critiques
Each week we will upload our work on Monday as a class. I will then present your work to the class. Every week we will pick a new student to proactive giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
Today Phoenix will give Constructive Criticism.
Tomorrow Tobi will.
11:30 DH7: Inktober
Jake Parker created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.
This week we are going to use INK (pen, marker) for our Design Homework. Doesn’t have to be special – any old pen will do.
Here are the 2023 prompts you are going to get to choose from:
When you have finished your sketch, I want you to include your name and date as always, but also the words “Inktober | Prompt” so we know which prompt you chose – and others will know in the future.
Save your file as (lastName)DH7.jpg.
11:35 Partner Based Project: A portal between the Natural and Human worlds
This week you are going to work with a partner to create a divergent multi-level game environment separated by a portal. One level will be Organic with a landscape, one level will be more Human with flat world, hard edged objects, etc.
The “Portal” can be any design you wish, and will contain a trigger box that allows the third person player to jump between the two worlds.
Your team will create a Game Trailer (sound designed) and print screens from UE that show off your work.
There will be two main roles:
3D Modeler / Asset Creator
- Build assets in Blender
- Export for Level Designer
Level Designer
- Create the levels, from the landscapes to the asset importing and placement
- Programming the functionality
- Create the final MP4 through OBS (30 seconds minimum that demonstrates all your work and the portal functionality)
- Create 3 print screens from Unreal that are visually interesting and make your words look as good ass they could
And a third job that one of the two needs to do:
Sound Designer
- Sound Design the trailer, and trim any OBS evidence at the start and the end in Premiere
At the end you will have 4 deliverables that your team will turn in (both partners)
- (lastName)(lastName)naturalHuman.mp4 – the sound designed trailer
- (lastName)(lastName)naturalHuman_1.jpg – still of your project from UE
- (lastName)(lastName)naturalHuman_2.jpg – still of your project from UE

2:20 Dailies
2:25 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:44 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
