10:15 Welcome and Introduction
- About Mr. Cronin
- Born in NYC
- Grew up in Arlington / South Burlington
- Lives in Underhill with family
- Went to Fairleigh Dickinson University for my undergraduate degree
- Went to Champlain College for my graduate degree
- I have a wife, 3 daughters, a dog, a cat, and lots of chickens.
- This was my favorite ride at the fair – Rockstar.
- My daughters tried out this new ride, and I wouldn’t as I was scared. They called me a wimp. That is fair.
- I am uncomfortable with new people, new situations, unknown timing transitions, unknown details, etc. Today is hard for me! If anyone else out there is nervous, we will get through it together. Good things are in store for us.
- Where we are going
- Semester 1 – Animation / Game Design / Video Editing
- Semester 2 – Web Design and Development / College Credits / Certifications / Design Competitions. Students from CAWD last year were National Champions in 3D Animation at the SkillsUSA Design competitions this year! You will see Alex in CAWD2, Brennan is off at Ringling College of Art and Design for Computer Animation.
- We do graphic design, video editing, and sketching throughout the entire year as it supports what we do.
- No secret to success in CAWD. Hard workers, good communicators, nice people, will do well. Some of you come very highly recommended, we are looking forward to seeing what you can do.
- CAWD Classroom opens at 9:55. Be ready to go right at 10:05 daily. This week I am going to have the room open earlier to ease into the year.
- We will a morning and afternoon break. Starting next week I will ask that you leave the room for break, move your body, get water, use the bathroom, go to the library, etc. This week I am going to keep the room open during these breaks as we get acclimated.
- We are dismissed at 2:45, except on Wednesday’s when it is 1:55.
- Attendance is always based on your computer clock. See if your devices are synced. Always need to be ready to go on the dot – and I will do the same for you when giving you breaks, lunch, dismissal.
- Bathrooms
- Dealer, Insomniac Games, Respawn Entertainment, Dockyard, Rovers North, Twitch – lots of different businesses our students have moved on to for CAWD careers.
- Ringling College of Art and Design, Rochester Institute of Technology, UVM, Champlain College, etc, are examples of where students in CAWD went to college from last year.
- English class and credit – how does it work?
- Food & Drink in CAWD
- No food in the room.
- Don’t throw food out in the room (it makes the room smell – let me tell you about these amazing eggrolls….)
- Drinks must be kept on the drink shelf and drank there.
- If there is an accident (don’t have an accident) please come and tell me ASAP so we can clean it.
- Parking is free (I think) / but you have to sign up on EWSD website.
- Cell phones / Discord / text messages -> Learning how to use our phones and Discord appropriately in 2023 and beyond.
- Cell phones! CAWD is a class where we are training you to be a young professional. Saying “no phone”, makes no sense to me as a teacher. Learning how to use your phone responsibly is the goal:
- Use your phone/Discord is like looking at the sun. If you get a notification, you can check it, respond, and then put it away. Don’t stare at it.
- Keep the notifications silent. We don’t want to hear vibrations.
- If this becomes an issue we will have to adjust your phone expectations, or have you check it in the main office at the start of the day. I have zero interest in this. Let’s just all work to practice using phones responsibly.
- Obviously, no speaking on the phones during class.
- Don’t take photos of anyone in class without expressed permission, even if in the background.
- Cell phones! CAWD is a class where we are training you to be a young professional. Saying “no phone”, makes no sense to me as a teacher. Learning how to use your phone responsibly is the goal:
- AI – we are going to use it more this year than last year. “They” say that avoiding AI is like putting your head in the sand. We need to practice using this new tool this year to our advantage. If you don’t have a ChatGPT account, please get one that we can use in class.
- We will actively work to improve our literacy skills. A very famous Dr. wrote “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” In CAWD students will:
- Take part in daily class read alongs, other than on Wednesday’s early release. Starting next week will follow along with me as I read a text aloud, “A Gentleman in Moscow“, as our first text. Seeing and hearing unfamiliar words can help in decoding and pickup of new vocabulary.
- We will end each day with 19 Minutes of silent reading, other than on Wednesday’s early release.
- Each student is going to bring in their own independent reading book to use during this time. Leave it in CAWD, or take back and forth each day. We will start this on Tuesday September 5th – the 4th day of school. You need to bring in a book, only requirements are the book can’t be something we are reading for our English class, nor can it be a graphic novel. Something different, text dense, which will challenge you. We will be going to the library tomorrow in our first day of English and you will get a chance to get a book.
- There will be a lot more about Grades, Certifications, WorkKeys, Design Competitions, etc – but we have lots of mornings to go over the rest of the info.
10:20 Your Personal Workstation
- We don’t share them – the machine is yours to use for the year. Bookmarks can be built, log into Spotify, Discord, etc. Nobody is to be on any others workstations.
- Once we get a bit father into the year music can be listened to as you work. Not during presentations, articles, teaching, etc. Independent work time = music ok.
- We are admins. With great power…
- Logging into the computers.
- Logging into the school (EWSD) Gmail:
- If already in the district your Gmail should continue to work from last year.
- If new to the district, you will use your first initial and then last name. Like “mcronin” for Matt Cronin. We do have some slight variations due to hyphens in names / someone already had your name:
- pbcharbonneau@vt.ewsd.org
- cobarber@vt.ewsd.org
- abergeron1@vt.ewsd.org
- scostelloterifay@vt.ewsd.org
- lingadottirmay@vt.ewsd.org
- omableyward@vt.ewsd.org
- bemartin@vt.ewsd.org
- temiller@vt.ewsd.org
- brsimpson@vt.ewsd.org
- Then the “@” symbol
- Then “vt.ewsd.org” at the end
- The default password for new users should be “12345678”
- If you were here last year it still works with your old password…right?
- Well – this is going to get messy – but let’s give it a shot. Can we all log in? I’d be ok with 90% for Day 1…
- Starting the year with a consistent background – Let me tell you a story…
- Dark Theme
- Bluetooth
- For now we are going to start with a “week_01” folder in the Documents. In a couple weeks we will move everyone to the cloud, but for now, Documents is fine. Let’s all find Documents and create that folder together. Nothing ever saved on the Desktop.
- Setting our homepage to cawdvt.org in Chrome
- Your class sketchbook! Take it home – no Design Homework’s until after Labor Day weekend – but feel free to start creating. Put your name tag on the front cover … now. It never stays over night.
- There is a form that I am giving you, along with a Student Handbook full of the rules of the school.
- The form needs to come back Friday with parent signature. This is actually your first assignment of the year, to get us all on track.
- The Handbook is for you to review.
- This Friday AM we are all going to sign a piece of paper saying “We agree” to the Handbook, so make sure you and your family are comfortable with it by then.
- Our Public drive – only available to CAWD / CAWD2. Think of it as an island in your kitchen. Anyone can write to it, anyone can delete. Only put copies of your work there. Copies only! As every year our class is going to respect each others work, do not touch the work of others.
- We have no printer. The world is digital. Embrace it.
- Don’t install any other software without talking to me first. If it is free / you own it, and it isn’t rated M, there is a good chance that we can figure something out. House rule – no FPS during school, even if T. Most likely you can install games that are T (but no FPS / boom headshot), that you own or that are free. These games can be played at lunch, not during class.
- Switch at lunch, we have options.
- Blender?
At the end of each day your station must look like it does when you walked in this morning. When you are done for the day always turn off your computer and leave the station clean. In CAWD we will have clean and organized work stations.
10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)
- 10 Minute break – you have to exit the room starting next week. For the first week of school we are going to keep the CAWD room open for breaks.
11:00 Schedules and location of classes
- CTE uses a Red vs. White vs. Blue (and using the older “A” vs. “B” day listing on the schedule)
- If you have a CTE Afternoon Academic class (7/8) you would leave CAWD at our 1:15 break for a 1:25 class. CTE doesn’t have afternoon academic classes on Wednesday – we use the time for callbacks and student meetings.
- EHS uses the “A” vs. “B” alternating day schedule
- If you have an EHS Afternoon Academic class (7/8) you would leave CAWD at 1:00 Wednesday’s only.
- If you have an EHS Afternoon Academic class (7/8) you would leave CAWD at 1:50 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
- Class room labeling / how to read our schedules
- 1 = first floor (typically)
- 2 = second floor
- M = under the library
- R = Rink classrooms
- Early release Wednesdays
- On Wednesday’s everyone has an early release. Today’s schedule will look compressed. Wednesday’s are weird, and the other days are consistent.
- We will roll and adapt to whatever your sending school and transportation needs are. Some other schools will have delayed starts every month. It will take some time to get adjusted to it, but honestly it becomes pretty routine pretty quickly.
- Schedules / let’s see where we are going when.
How to get to D105A and the Rink (any room number with a R):
How to get to the IT Helpdesk and the Nurse from CAWD:
How to get the M classrooms (any room number with an M):
11:35 Lunch
- Free again this year.
- You can have double breakfast, but only a single lunch.
- You have been emailed your specific lunch code. You will type this in each time you use your account.
- We are all going to walk down today and get the lay of the land for lunch, as this is new to everyone.
- Remember – no food in the room.
