11:30 Connected Character

This week in CAWD you are going to create your own custom character.

I am going to give you as designers a longer and longer leash as we move through our character creation and rigging process. What I will say is this character will be used in a January Character animation in … January.

Last year I kept the students on rails and required:

  1. Environment (Coral Reef / Underwater Scene)
  2. Character (Fish)

Let’s see an example of a class project this year based on these constraints.

This year I am going to open it up a big and require:

  1. Environment (Not required as of yet – but your character you build this week will determine your environment)
  2. Character (Whatever you would like – remember that you are creating a story around your character)

You are going to create your story, your scene – you have full creative control.

This week you are going to:

  • Come up with a custom character. If you think Aliens like above, your Environment and Character Animation will be sci-fi. If you pick a Zombie, your Environment will likely be Zombie friendly. If you choose to create something light and airy, your Environment will reflect that. Your first idea may not be the best idea!
  • Model your Character
  • Texture (consider using texture paint?)
  • Rig using an Armature – I would recommend the armature be connected to an Animation Controller at the end to control it.

Deliverables:

  • (lastName)Character_1.jpg
  • (lastName)Character_2.jpg
  • (lastName)Character_3.jpg
  • (lastName)CharacterHappyGreeting.mp4 – Minimum of 5 second animation where your character is greeting / acknowledging the camera. This will demonstrate that your character is ready to animate in the future.

11:55 Lunch

  • No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
  • You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.
