10:10 Week 16 Animation Tests – Part 2 – Chest Opening and Item Get Animation
Today we will continue working on our Animation tests, with Part 2 and Part 3. Final file names will come out in the Thursday Dayplan.
For now just animate and render.
In our second animation test, we are going to work on a Chest Opening and Item Get Animation, similar to what we see in Zelda.
The modeling does not need to be detailed, it’s more about how you use your camera, your character, and create a game ready / animation ready … animation. Remember that a viewport render is acceptable for this.
You need to:
- See a closed chest, move to it. (you don’t see your feet don’t animate your feet!)
- Open the chest.
- See / collect an item (could be as simple as Suzanne’s head!)
- Consider how you can creatively incorporate different camera angles (using camera markers so the camera jumps from shot to shot) to show off your animation
Animate and render today, final file names come out in the Thursday Dayplan.

11:00 Week 16 Animation Tests – Part 3 – Character Selection Screen Animation
Ok – your character made it. Your character has been selected to go into the next Mortal Kombat / Street Fighter / Apex Legends / Overwatch / Genshin rollout.
In our final animation test I want you to create an animation similar to what we see when we are selecting our character at the beginning of a game.
Thinking of our characters:
- Could Tobi’s use Magic, some sort of spinning spell?
- Could Mia’s jump up and reach the camera as dog like? Make the camera look down?
- Could Connie’s fly in?
- Could Lee’s do a happy clown-ish cartwheel, or bust in like “surprise”!
- Could Tennyson’s swing in, as a primate?
- Could Jace’s…… be any more terrifying?
You need to:
- Setup composition in rule of thirds with your character on the left or right third – not the middle! (We are going to use the opposite third for your character name and stats … tomorrow.)
- Create an animation similar to what we saw above in the example, or similar to any of the eleventeen billion character select animations you have seen in the wild. Something as simple as your character breathing at the absolute minimum, to …. however good you want to take it. (If thinking of dropping serious $ on animation in college and hope for a related career – don’t just give us the character breathing.)
