10:10 Game Publishing
Game publishing – Let’s go through the process together to build an .exe file from your game.
To publish a Unity game as a standalone executable (.exe) for Windows, you need to choose the Windows build target in the Build Settings dialog and then click the “Build” button. This process generates an .exe file and a Data folder containing your game’s resources.
What is really important is your organize your scenes. I recommend you put the Home screen as the first item in your scene build index.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
- Open Build Settings: In the Unity Editor, go to File > Build Settings.
- Select Platform: Choose Windows as the target platform.
- Add Open Scenes: Click Add Open Scenes to include the scenes you want in your build.
- Player Settings: Click Player Settings at the bottom of the Build Settings window.
- Configure Settings: In Player Settings, you can configure your game settings, including custom icons and splash images – this is a great place to make your load up look like it is branded by you!
- Build: Click the Build button.
- Specify Build Location: Choose a location to save your build. I recommend just creating a folder on your desktop. You can move it from there. Name of Game_V1
After these steps, Unity will create a directory containing your game’s .exe and the Data folder, which contains all the necessary assets for the game to run. You will then need to provide both the .exe and the Data folder to others so they can run the game.
You can drop those items Public Folders – CAWD2 – FInal Game Builds. Then, test out your build by playing the .exe file. And try out the games of your classmates too!
