10:10 Start of SkillsUSA Pin Design Final Design
This morning we are going to use the time to “build” our final pin.
Think of all the different design elements we have created as lego pieces, and now we are going to combine them together to create the final design.
We have to include the final text in the design, some of what we already have, some that we need to add.
- Vermont (should be there already)
- SkillsUSA (written exactly as it says, one word, lowercase “kills”)
- 2025
It’s all about putting it together now. Add these design elements in and create a final version of your pin. Let’s start the process together and then give you work time.
10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)
11:00 English
11:55 SkillsUSA Pin Design Specifics
In preparation for the SkillsUSA Pin Design submission, we need to look a the project submission specifics.
As we move into our SkillsUSA 3rd Quarter there will be super, micro specifics that we need to follow. If we don’t, often the submission (regardless of the competition, Pin Design, Game Design, Animation or Web) just gets disqualified.
This morning we are going to look at the project brief / requirements. We are going to think of this as a request for proposal. We are creating the proposal.
The official project requirements.
We need to look at the official size requirements. This is the state and national size requirements.
We will need two sizes to display. One size is the smaller actual pin size, one size is the larger presentational size. We need a:
- 7″ version and a 1.5″ version
Let’s get in Illustrator and setup a new document with guides – virtual ruler helpers. Then we have to have duplicate versions, a big version, and a small version.
Today was just the lesson on how to do this. We are still going to have time to work on the final pin design first – but now we at least know how to do it.
Save this file as lastNamePinSizesExample.ai and move back to your final Pin Design – creating your final look and feel for your design.
12:25 Lunch
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

1:00 A Gentleman in Moscow
A Gentleman in Moscow is a reader’s dream — a wonder-full, nuanced story full of wit, insight, and imagination.
Read along with Mr. Cronin. Improve literacy, word decoding, enjoy a nice story, and unplug from the world.
1:20 Afternoon Break (10 minutes)
1:30 Speed Design
Speed Designs are 10 minute sprints in CAWD where we practice. It could be any medium – 3D, 2D, video, programming, etc.
1:45 SkillsUSA Pin Design Final Design
Don’t worry about two sizes yet, just keep working to design your large final pin.
Next deadline for our Pins is a Tuesday AM presentation to the class – graded – that will have a feedback component through out form as in our character animations.
Work and save!
2:15 Dailies
2:20 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:39 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
