Friday, October 9th

Friday, October 9th

Class Hours: 10:05 – 2:40
Mr. Cronin

Notes

  • Friday! Have a great weekend – try to go outside and play, at least a little.
  • Today is our final Blue day, as well as English.
  • Heads up that next MONDAY (our next day of class) we are scheduled to go with GAWD2 to Catamount in Williston. THIS HAS BEEN SHIFTED UP A DAY DUE TO THE WEATHER. You need to:
    • Bring your sketchbooks / 1 pencil (at least) so we can draw some outdoor elements … outside. This will be time in class that we can use to do our design homework which is concept art for our first Game Level – which we will start on Tuesday.
    • Bring enough clothes so that we are warm and dry.
    • We will be back by lunch / late lunch / ish.

10:05 Attendance and Article

10:10 GAWD Safety Training!

By law we are going to go over some basic GAWD (and all office) safety training, and then we all have to say that we received this training (signature), and then I need to submit this to the state agency of education.

Signatures, and we move on.

10:30 Unreal Engine

  • Basics of the UI.
  • Let’s export an asset and get it in the game.
  • All about preparing for next week!

10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)

11:00 Design Homework 7: Outdoor Landscape Concept Art

We are going over Design Homework 7 today as we are going to Catamount on Monday to do our DH in teams of 3/4.

For the next 2 weeks you will be working in the following teams:

Team Nintendo (need to elect a Creative Director)

  • Eric Dion
  • Stephen Duchaine
  • Gavin Goucher
  • Ellie Johnson

Team Rockstar (need to elect a Creative Director)

  • Saurab Tamang
  • Mika Bushway
  • Josiah Montgomery
  • Jack Burridge

Team EA (need to elect a Creative Director)

  • Sam Pregger
  • JR Santamore
  • Maddox Swink

This is how the following teams will share grades and assets:

  • Need a CD that will organize your team for the next 2 weeks.
  • Design Homework 7: Outdoor Landscape Concept Art – an average of what all 3/4 of you sketch out. You will each do the project and get assessed, and what shows up in your Gradebook is the average of your teams grade. When we arrive at Catamount on Monday you will work in teams of 3/4 and create your Concept Art for a Low Poly Forest world. This will be a group grade – your Design Homework’s averaged together. It is up to the CD and team members to make sure you move around the space, and by the end of our time at Catamount fill up a sheet of paper with different forest elements which could show up in your level. The CD will manage the team! Welcome to the real world! Here are some examples – what could show up in a Forest World? Let’s assume that Level 1 will be on the ground.

  • Over the next 2 weeks each team will share 3D assets created for their world. The CD will divvy up who is making what. While you are all using the same assets, this will be a separate grade. You will make the assets as a team, but the final product will be built individually, but you need to rely on your team to make good ingredients for our 3D world.
    • Week 7 – Ground Level 1
    • Week 8 – Sky / “upper” / Level 2
    • All made with group made assets

11:15 Literal Visualization Animations

Animation

Check back to the Wednesday Dayplan for specifics.

11:35 A Gentleman in Moscow

Imagine being sentenced to spend your life inside a luxury hotel. In A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, Count Alexander Rostov faces exactly that. Trapped in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel after the Russian Revolution, he builds unexpected friendships and watches history unfold outside. The novel asks an important question: Can you still build a meaningful life when your freedom is taken away?

A class read-along gives us a chance to slow down, disconnect from screens, and get lost in a great book together. As we read, you’ll naturally build your vocabulary, strengthen your reading skills, and experience a story.

11:55 Lunch

  • No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
  • You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

12:25 English

1:10 Afternoon Break

1:25 Speed Design

Speed Designs are 15 minute sprints in GAWD where we practice. It could be any medium – 3D, 2D, video, programming, etc.

2:15 Dailies

2:20 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:

  • Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
  • Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
  • Unplug

At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.

2:40 Dismissal
