Mr. Cronin
Notes
- Welcome to Week 9! Let’s all make our folders now.
- Halloween is this Saturday! Make sure your costumes are ready!
- Jack – it’s time to create our proposal for our Holiday Smash Tournament. I need a proposal from you, taking into the feedback by the people.
- Bracket size?
- Single elimination? Double elimination?
- Rulesets?
- Judges?
- I have 8 controllers Mika recommended on order.
- Assume that we want to have the finals December 23rd – how many lunch sessions would it take to get there?
- Do we do round robin for seeding? Do we agree on rankings?
- The sooner we get this started, the better – let’s plan to talk on our Wednesday MMM’s? Everyone give Jack feedback on what we should do, this is a crowd sourced collaboration, but we need to have a point person to run it and Jack volunteered.
This Friday is the END of Quarter 1. Any student with missing work must get it in by Friday EOD, regardless on if you get extended time for whatever reason. I need to pull some levers and get grades to all your different sending schools. When you walk into school on Monday November 2nd we only think about Quarter 2. Quarter 1 grades will be set in stone!

11:00 Critiques

Each week we will upload our work on Monday. I will then present your work to the class. Each project I will pick a student to practice giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
11:30 Design Homework 9: The Collectable

This week we are going to create some concept art for our collectable – whatever it is that you will collect in your game.
Your item should connect in some way to the basic style and potential lore of what you are creating. If doing a snow based world, maybe something wintery like a hat or a mug of hot coco? If doing something dark and foreboding, something like a smiley face won’t make sense.
First – think about what would make sense for your game / your style.
Next you will draw a sheet of concept art with at least 3 different versions of it from different sides, with color and with shading.
Something similar to this (if it had color and shading):

Another example with MORE views than required, but it looks really nice:

Another example, with 3 views, has shading, needs color:

Remember to be eligible for the A or B, you have to have:
- shading
- color
Save your file as lastNameDH_9.jpg.
11:55 Lunch

- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

12:30 Collectable Practice

Let’s use some time this afternoon to make a 3D Version of the class Mario Coin to use as a collection element in our game.
Today we will:
- Model
- Export/Import
- Give a material
- Setup as a Blueprint
- Add rotating movement to catch the users eye
- Depending on time setup some basic functionality with a console log?

12:50 A Gentleman in Moscow

Imagine being sentenced to spend your life inside a luxury hotel. In A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, Count Alexander Rostov faces exactly that. Trapped in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel after the Russian Revolution, he builds unexpected friendships and watches history unfold outside. The novel asks an important question: Can you still build a meaningful life when your freedom is taken away?
A class read-along gives us a chance to slow down, disconnect from screens, and get lost in a great book together. As we read, you’ll naturally build your vocabulary, strengthen your reading skills, and experience a story.

2:20 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.
