10:35 WorkKeys
As part of the school year CAWD will give you a pre-test (this Wednesday and next Thursday) and a post-test (in May) in Workplace Documents and Applied Math. This test will happen at the start of our days and for most of us last for 1 hour.
These tests are diagnostics to gauge your current abilities and track growth over the year. You can score from:
- 7
- 6
- 5
- 4
- 3
- <3
If you score 5 or higher on a test, you don’t need to take the test again in the spring. This in the past has meant a day off (or 2) in May.
If you score higher, you have the chance to earn college credit and a WorkKeys certification that you can use to get into college, get a job, etc.
In short, we have to do it, and you want to try as hard as possible. I will proctor the majority of us in this room, other students will be randomly assigned other rooms with other proctors.
The moral of the story for today is don’t be late on Wednesday. This isn’t something we can skip, and if you aren’t here or are late it means you will be pulled from CAWD another time to take the testing, and that could impact your workflow. We have carved out time this week (and next week) so it doesn’t impact your workflow. Let’s just use this time well and get it done.
10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)
11:00 Critiques
Each week we will upload our work on Monday as a class. I will then present your work to the class. Every week we will pick a new student to proactive giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
As we are starting the year for the first couple of weeks I will be modeling the process of giving constructive criticism, but by late September you will be giving it your classmates.
11:30 Transferable and Employability grades
As a class we also look at Transferrable and Employability Skills which can be applied to any industry. These business soft skills are what ALL employers are looking for, so we are going to practice them in class. Some include:
- Following directions
- Working well with others
- Leadership skills
- Working with setbacks / taking feedback
- Independent learning
- Intrinsic desire to do well
- Learning from mistakes
- Being timely
- Working clean
- Taking lessons and applying, making it part of your skillset
Over the last couple of weeks I have been recording, but not assessing, some of these employability traits. Some areas to improve on:
- Making sure computers are off and stations are CLEAN at the end of the day
- Having chair pushed in / lowered
- Not keeping up in lesson, off task
- Having books organized
- Having art supplies neatly away
- Using inappropriate language
- Tardiness
- Missing Speed Designs
- Missing Dailies
- Missing Assignments
The first couple of weeks I see where we may need to improve. Nobody has lost any points yet, I was just recording some baseline data so we know what to work on. Now you know, I am literally telling you where are some areas to focus on this week. This week and beyond I AM going to be be assessing how you work through the T&E lens.
11:40 Isometric Art in Blender
This week we are going to create some Isometric Art. An isometric view is a 3D drawing technique that creates the illusion of depth and space in a two-dimensional image. The term “isometric” comes from the Greek words isos and metron, which mean “equal measure”. 120 degrees between each line in a cube.
First – let’s talk about isometric 3D (such as what a computer perceives, or something without 2 eyes) vs. what a human with 2 eyes would see.
Let’s explore in Blender how setup a plate for an external scene, or a room for an interior.
12:00 DH4: Isometric Cube Art
In the next page of your sketchbook tape in a sheets (or 2) of isometric dot paper.
Create something literal, or simply create an abstract design.
Color or shading required! Lots of options in the back if you need. If you want to use the alcohol markers put something under the sheet to prevent bleed.
Save your file as lastNameDH_4.jpg.
12:25 Lunch
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

Week 4 Agency
- lastNameAgency_1.jpg through lastNameAgency_3.jpg
2:15 Dailies
2:20 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:39 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
