Thursday, September 3rd

Thursday, September 3rd

Class Hours: 10:05 – 2:40
Mr. Cronin

Notes

  • Welcome to Thursday – the final day of the week! Everyone enjoy your long Labor Day weekend! See you all on Tuesday September 8th.
    • This will be the day our first two graded assignments are due:
      1. DH1: Castle Concept Art
      2. Blender Castle project
    • So if both are “finished” before you leave today, make sure you get them done over the weekend! Email your Castle back and forth for now – next week we will install the ability to save to the cloud.
  • Today is our only BLUE day of the week.
  • Today is an English day, meaning after lunch today go straight to English. We are going to have a shortened break today by 5 minutes – be back to GAWD by 1:20 – as we have a 1:25 Fire Drill. Again, today only, 5 minutes left in our afternoon break, so we can all be in the same location when the drill happens.
  • If you are in a Blue class, you will go to the Fire Drill with them – make sure you are in your class a bit early to avoid the madness.
  • As we get into the swing of normalcy, notice on Thursday (and Friday) we will do our read-along before lunch.
  • Next Wednesday, September 9th we have our GAWD Back To School Open House from 5:30 – 7pm. We would love for you to bring in your family, meet the faculty, see your space, show them a bit of what we are doing in the classroom. This is less than a week away – tell family and friends early!

10:05 Attendance and Article

10:10 Fire Drill Practice

This afternoon we are going to have our first Fire Drill at 1:25. Let’s practice the procedure for later on today – and if we ever need to use it for real.

  • Single rally location outside, we always walk to the same location.
  • I take attendance outside and turn it in outside – so everyone needs to get to the location quickly so they aren’t marked missing.
  • Always bring KEYS PHONES and JACKET. I have had these events and then for one reason or another we don’t get to go back in the school, and humans (students and teachers) that had their KEYS PHONES and JACKETS were always in the best situation.
  • Leave school stuff, that can all be replaced.

10:25 GAWD Project: Castle

Work and save.

10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)

11:00 Blender

  • Render Engines we will use in Blender:
    • EEVEE – real time, fast, fakes everything. Fast, but fake. This is take out food. Not perfect, but fast. Default for Blender – if you don’t change your rendering engine, you are using EEVEE.
    • Cycles – slow, incredibly accurate and pretty. Often referred to as Physically Based. Uses many of the rules of the real world. This is that slow holiday roast, long time to make, but often worth the results.
  • CPU vs. GPU
  • Samples

11:35 A Gentleman in Moscow

Imagine being sentenced to spend your life inside a luxury hotel. In A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, Count Alexander Rostov faces exactly that. Trapped in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel after the Russian Revolution, he builds unexpected friendships and watches history unfold outside. The novel asks an important question: Can you still build a meaningful life when your freedom is taken away?

A class read-along gives us a chance to slow down, disconnect from screens, and get lost in a great book together. As we read, you’ll naturally build your vocabulary, strengthen your reading skills, and experience a story.

11:55 Lunch

  • No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
  • You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

12:25 English

1:10 Afternoon Break

Make sure you are back by 1:20!

1:25 Fire Drill

1:40 Speed Design (delayed start due to Fire Drill)

Speed Designs are 15 minute sprints in GAWD where we practice. It could be any medium – 3D, 2D, video, programming, etc.

1:55 Afternoon Practice & Production

During these afternoon production windows you can choose to work on any project GAWD related. You have two projects this week that you can work on during these Practice & Production windows:

  1. DH1: Castle Concept Art
  2. GAWD Project: Castle

2:15 Dailies

2:20 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:

  • Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
  • Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
  • Unplug

At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.

2:40 Dismissal
