10:10 Unreal

Let’s setup a basic “negative” condition.. For example:

  • (Zero out the coin code first – this means coins restart when game loads)
  • Start with 3 hearts
  • Touch enemy we lose a heart.
  • Heart goes below 1 we die and go to a “You Lose” screen.
  • Setup Easter Egg / Cheat Code?

10:50 Morning Break

11:00 Critiques

Each week we will upload our work on Monday. I will then present your work to the class. Each project I will pick a student to practice giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.

If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time.

11:30 Adding the Enemy into the game…

Just as we spoke about last week, we are going to end 2025 with you thinking about an enemy to “go against” in your game.

We have done an enemy that takes score away from us on overlap. If our score falls below a certain number, we lose.

We could have a timer that counts down – I typically use a timeline. If you don’t complete the level before the timer runs out, we lose.

You can go down the Wyatt path and do some AI follow programming? The enemy touches you, you lose. You can learn how to use the follow AI as your agency, and add it to your game this week.

Floor is lava, and you get 4 pieces of heart to start the game, and lava takes away from pieces of heart. The pieces of heart are totally separate from the coin collection system that we still use to progress the levels. Start to think about more than one “item”, inventory type mindset.

We are going to start today and have through Friday to work on this project. We are going to have visitors on Wednesday and Thursday, but it should be a nice chunk of time that allows you to really push yourself and be creative. Learn new stuff, tinker, let’s start playing each others game so you can watch and get feedback, etc.

And sound. SOUND! People let’s get some sound going.

You will need to demonstrate the enemy “hurting” you and your losing, as well as all the previous weeks content. At a minimum in your OBS recording this week:

  • Menu
    • Play and Quit buttons
  • Level 1
    • Score UI
    • Collect 3 items to move to Level 2
  • Level 2
    • Score UI
    • Collect 3 items to win and move to You Win level
  • You Win Level
    • Replay and Quit buttons
  • You Lose Level
    • Replay and Quit buttons
    • (You have to demonstrate losing)

Up to 5 levels at a minimum! You are literally a Game Developer at this point.

Save your file as lastNameGameEnemy.mp4.

11:55 Lunch

  • No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
  • You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

12:30 Create / Download Enemy

Game Design

This week we will all be required to program in a negative game state (death) due to some event (hit by enemy, hit by enemy a certain number of times, timer counts down, etc).

Build it now. Art, UI, even basic enemy programming.

Create the art over the next 2 days so you can program functionality in later on this week.

12:50 A Gentleman in Moscow

A Gentleman in Moscow is a reader’s dream — a wonder-full, nuanced story full of wit, insight, and imagination.

Read along with Mr. Cronin. Improve literacy, word decoding, enjoy a nice story, and unplug from the world.

1:10 Afternoon Break

1:25 Speed Design

Speed Designs are 10 minute sprints in CAWD where we practice. It could be any medium – 3D, 2D, video, programming, etc.

1:40 Afternoon Practice & Production

Week 15 Agency

  • lastNameAgency_1.jpg through lastNameAgency_3.jpg

2:15 Dailies

2:20 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:

  • Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
  • Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
  • Unplug

At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.

2:40 Dismissal
