Notes

  • Welcome to Week 18! Let’s make our folders now.

    • Starting at Lore Screen.
    • Must be able to play through Level 3.
    • Game Testing feedback will be live – including Gamer Scores. It’s good for teams to see where they stand.
  • Remember there is no Agency nor Design Homework this week. The focus is the multi week, larger weight, Partner Game.

10:10 Last Looks

Last looks is when I give students time to upload their completed work to the weekly folder on the public, in a folder that is your last name. Remember we aren’t doing any work today – this is just when we turn it in. Plan on not doing more than scan / upload each Monday morning – and the scanner may have a line!

10:30 Exploring with Meshy

Meshy is a version of Generative AI that allows you to create models from text prompts. It fits in-between creating everything as an artist, and downloading the art as a Game Dev / Programmer.

This morning we are going to spin through the tool – hopefully connecting to our EWSD email accounts.

There are limits to what we can generate for free – but it will be good to try out.

Benefits of using AI for model creation:

  • Could be faster than modeling the assets yourself. The goal of the AI is speed speed speed.
  • Even if you don’t truly use the model, you can use it as reference.

Negatives of using AI for model creation:

  • Cost / credits right now – limited generative spawns. (Anyone know where we can do this for free unlimited with other resources?)
  • Topology is often terrible.
  • Revision after revision (costing credits), … that ends up with bad topology (so we have to fix), … that takes more and more time. Could you just have created it yourself?

10:50 Morning Break

11:00 Critiques

Each week we will upload our work on Monday. I will then present your work to the class. Each project I will pick a student to practice giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.

If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.

We only have 1 sketch per person to go over today – this should be quick.

11:20 Game Development Teams and Week 17 and Week 18 Assignment

We are starting each day with a meeting at the CD’s desk to go over the GDD

  • Start constant communication with your team members throughout the day.
  • Gather round the CD’s machine to review the GDD.
  • Update the GDD – (we will be opening and looking at at the Big Board). What does the CD need done?

Once you have done this move on to individual production, but keep talking and keep the conversation going. You should be in a low density conversation constantly with your partner for the next week and a bit.

Remember that your team will be hosting GAWD2 students for a Playtest session tomorrow from 11 – lunch. I will be making all information public, including Gamer Scores – so you will see by the end of the day tomorrow where you sit compared to your peers.

11:55 Lunch

  • No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
  • You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

12:25 Attendance and Article

12:30 Game Development Teams and Week 17 and Week 18 Assignment

12:50 1984

Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) is a dystopian novel by George Orwell that explores totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and the manipulation of truth through the story of Winston Smith in the superstate of Oceania, ruled by the omnipresent Party and its figurehead, Big Brother.

Read along with Mr. Cronin. Improve literacy, word decoding, enjoy a nice story, and unplug from the world.

1:10 Afternoon Break

1:25 Speed Design

Speed Designs are 10 minute sprints in CAWD where we practice. It could be any medium – 3D, 2D, video, programming, etc.

1:40 Afternoon Practice & Production

Week 17 and 18 Team Game Work (due Monday 1/26)

2:15 Dailies

2:20 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:

  • Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
  • Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
  • Unplug

At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.
