10:10 Lore Spotlight on a GAWD game

This morning, we are going to have Michael up in front of the room. We are going to create a Lore sheet that gives the basic information about the game, backstory, and the reason why we are doing what we are doing.
The story – or Lore – of the game is often what hooks players in. Think the story of Hyrule or The Covenant or Mario.
We are going to start hopefully making some emotional connections between the player and the game itself.
Everyone will be creating a Lore Level (at least 1) this week that gives us a backstory on the game – available through the Main Menu. This will be part of your Game Presentations to the class next Monday and Tuesday.
10:50 Morning Break

11:00 Critiques

Each week we will upload our work on Monday. I will then present your work to the class. Each project I will pick a student to practice giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
11:30 Lore / Polishing / Preparing for Presentations next Monday

This week we are going to focus on two main elements, 1. Lore, and 2. Preparing for presentations that will happen next Monday and Tuesday of next week. You will not know who is presenting on which day until Monday.
1. The Lore

Create a new level / widget (at least 1) and use text and images to tell us some backstory to your game. Everyone will read your Lore before we play your game.
Remember that you are in full control here – so think about different fonts, think about attractive design of the Lore – not just default text.

Remember that (especially if 1st person) you can create a character image for yourself, so we “feel” like are that character. Could this be a render from Blender? Could this be a stylized image from Illustrator? Could this be something you create in AI using prompts and your characters situation (size, timeline, etc)?
This “Lore” button will be on the Main Menu of the game, and once in the Lore section you will have to have a way back to the Main Menu.
2. Preparing for the Presentation

This is the big push to complete / polish your game. Remember that you are going to have the rest of your class play your game, read your lore – you want it to be as impressive as possible.
Items to consider:
- Does the game function completely – first and foremost.
- Is it pretty in game? Do you see a flat horizon? Do you have some janky models that need to be fixed? How about composition and arrangement of assets?
- Audio?
- How do your widgets look? Are we using default settings or have we brought in supportive imagery and fonts to make sure it “feels” the way you want it.
Game Reviewers will be reading lore, playing your game, and then assessing your work, as well as giving it a Gamer Score. This will happen next Monday and Tuesday.
Deliverable
Create an MP4 with OBS that demonstrates your Lore section. We don’t need everything this week.
Call your file lastNameLore.mp4.
11:55 Lunch

2:20 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.
