10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)
11:00 VR/AR Learning Teams and Learning Area Setup
As part of our new year learning we are going to do something a little different. We are going to work in learning team learn how to use the Quest 3 with Unreal Engine 5. We are going to learn how to integrate it with Unreal with VR as well as AR.
The kicker is – this is all new and I have no idea how to do it! This is actually by design – if we only do in class what I know how to do, we will not go as fast or learn as much as we can. For this unit we are going to learn in collaborative teams of 4 students, learning on the fly, sharing knowledge, acting more like colleagues at a big game studio compared to freshmen sitting in desks in health class.
First – your team is going to setup a VR/AR learning area on the far side of the room. We are going to use this area as our studios to learn and tinker. Think of it like a digital maker space. Tinkering will be the name of the game. Try fail, try fail, try fail, try succeed. This is life, better we start practicing.
Some have a little VR/AR experience, some have none, it doesn’t matter. You are going to work with your team to learn and implement. Some may be better doing the research, some may be doing the programming, some will be setting up the headset, some may be tasked with making assets for the demos, some may be the presenters to the class and guests, everyone will take part.
This project is going to give us a chance to use different intelligences, different strengths, work together, and try some new technologies that are slated to be commonplace over the horizon.

Step 1 – Setting up your teams physical space
Step 1, setting up our team space on the other side of the room. We have never done this before, this is all new, and it will be organic and messy. It starts now.
This is what each team is going to have access to.
- 2 Desks – arranged however we want to, we just need to leave CAWD lounge where it is. Maybe a team lead from each team works together to agree on room layout? Who likes arranging rooms and workspaces? You will design your physical world – I just think the desks should be next to each other.
- 2 Computers for VR/AR Development (take from the walls) – you will move and setup. Who likes setting up workstations, getting things updated, etc. Who likes clean cable management?
- Power strips and extension cords. More cable management!
- BRAND NEW Quest 3 kits (we get these on Friday)
This morning is all about physical space setup, updating the machines, etc.
This is going to be collaborative, messy, organic, but I think a heck of a lot of fun over the next couple of months. This is work that we will do in addition to our normal CAWD work, give you a chance to work in teams, and practice working toward a common goal.
12:20 Wednesday WorkKeys for certain students
The following students are taking the Graphic Literacy WorkKeys assessment tomorrow morning at 10:15 AM.
Come to CAWD first and check in with me for attendance, and then you will head right out to your testing.
I am sure they will give you some explanations on what you are doing, but you WANT to do well on this test. Trust.
12:25 Lunch
- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

Remember that our Pin Presentation on Thursday at the start of class. Check the Feedback forms (I am setting up at lunch on Tuesday) and create your big and small version, taking into consideration the feedback from the class!
2:15 Dailies
2:20 “19 Minutes”
4 of 5 days per week we will end our day in CAWD with the “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At 2:39 each day I will come to 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened in your story over that day’s reading session. It is neat to hear little pockets of a story, here and there.
