10:10 Game Development Teams and Week 17 and Week 18 Assignment

Over the next 2 weeks we are going to focus on Partner Game Development. 50% of our games will move on, 50% of our games will pause development.

Games moving on (Creative Director in bold) and new team members:

  • Bubba / Quang
  • Bourdeau / Melissa
  • Jackson / Shelby
  • Wyatt / Jayden / Bent
  • Ben / Piche
  • Young / Goyet
  • Amanda / Post

The Bold names above are the Creative Directors. Their job will be to run this project to success over this and next week. The non bold name will be the worker bee.

Remember our 2 week project really isn’t 2 weeks in full:

  • Week 17 (this week – 2.5 days?)
    • Today
    • Thursday (English)
    • Friday (English and Mr. Bohmann Sculpting Workshop)
    • (nothing for this project due during Week 17)
  • Week 18 (next week 3.5 days?)
    • Monday off – only 4 days of school.
    • Thursday (English) & visitors from BHS
    • Friday (English)
    • (work due at the end of Week 18)

So while it is a project that spans 2 weeks, it is a project that spans 2 light weeks.

Next week we will also have the GAWD students in to play your game and give you feedback. Think of this happening somewhere around Wednesday of next week…

2 Week Team Deliverable / Team Grade

usability testing
  • Creative Director creates a GDD (Game Development Document) on in Google Docs and shares with the other Designer. In this the CD will write out what she/he needs for development for tracking. The other Designer will use this document to see what needs to be created, and communicate back and forth with the CD. We are going to have open and frequent check ins, and we can use document as a guide.
    • Write out a list of activities / deliverables for each team member to do.
    • Share the document with the other team member but also cawdlead@vt.ewsd.org (the lead GAWD) computer. Then we can the fly see who is to do what when.
    • All teams must have this filled out to get full break this AM – this should be created and shared first, even before you fill it out.
    • We are going to have time each morning to kick off our day by reviewing this document and tweaking it for the days work ahead.
  • Review linked feedback and fix your Menu, Lore, Level 1, and Level 2 – everything.
    • The expectation is that if there is frequent feedback that says “it’s too dark”, that you light your level better. If the feedback says “hard to make that jump on the water level”, that you incorporate that feedback and make the jump easier. Use the feedback!
    • Review this feedback together and make a plan in your GDD…
  • Build Level 3
    • Ensure that Level 3 is fully functional.
    • Level 3 should be the hardest.
    • Incorporate the required sculpted element – we are going to learn how to do this on Friday with Mr. Bohmann.
    • Create Gameplay Overview Video
      • Show us everything. Win, lose, show us every condition, show us the Lore screen, etc.
      • Visuals and Audio should come from the Gameplay only.
      • Time may be variable.
      • Show us your game. Make it a documentary.
    • Create Gameplay Trailer
      • Create a 30 second Game Trailer.
      • Visuals and Audio manipulated and pumped up in Premiere. It is here you could use MLG air horns so long as it pushes the hype / narrative of your game.
      • Make us what to play your game. Make it a commercial.

Your two team deliverables:

  • lastNameLastNameGameOverview.mp4 (be reasonable based on your game – longer than 30 seconds, shorter than 10 minutes)
  • lastNameLastNameGameTrailer.mp4 (30 seconds)

We don’t want to see OBS in either if you and your partner are looking for the “A”.

We are going to be dedicating the majority of our time over the next 2 weeks towards pushing our games to the next level – pushing them to be Portfolio pieces.

The Creative Director and the Worker Bee have an option – which I do not recommend – that you don’t continue to develop the existing game, but you start fresh. This would mean that EVERYTHING that you have done already is put aside, and you and your partner start fresh and create the following:

  • Menu Level
    • Play
    • Quit
    • Lore
  • Level 1
  • Level 2
  • Level 3
  • You Lose
    • Based on hitting the enemies
  • You win

You would have to make sure you include all of what we have done for our games up until now, but I wanted to at least give you the option.

### I repeat, I think throwing away all that has been developed doesn’t make sense – but you and your partner are a team, and I will allow this decision to make it much harder on yourself. Learning comes from all different experiences… ###

At the end of this project, you will also be assessing your partners work and effort. This coworker grade should take into account:

  • Engagement with project
  • Skills displayed / assigned deliverables met
  • Communication skills of your partner
  • Can you rely on them?

It is time to really start protecting your brand. Make people say “Phew I get to work with Sawyer“, not “ugh, I have to work with Sawyer“.

10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)

11:00 Midweek Morning Meetings

Wednesday’s we will have our Midweek Morning Meetings.

You and I will meet 1:1 and we can:

  • See what you are missing for assignments
  • Go over the previous weeks T&E grades
  • Go over anything you are pretty confused about so I can review

When not meeting with me – I want you working on on your team based game.

11:35 Lunch

  • No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
  • You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

12:05 Attendance and Article

12:10 Game Development Teams and Week 17 and Week 18 Assignment

12:40 A Gentleman in Moscow

A Gentleman in Moscow is a reader’s dream — a wonder-full, nuanced story full of wit, insight, and imagination.

Read along with Mr. Cronin. Improve literacy, word decoding, enjoy a nice story, and unplug from the world.

1:00 Afternoon Break (15 minutes)

1:15 Afternoon Practice & Production

Week 17 and 18 Team Game Work (due Monday 1/26)

  • lastNameLastNameGameOverview.mp4
  • lastNameLastNameGameTrailer.mp4

DH17: Summative Perspective Portfolio Piece (due Tuesday 1/20)

  • lastNameDH_17.jpg

1:20 Dailies

1:25 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:

  • Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
  • Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
  • Unplug

At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.
