10:25 Web Design

  • Review of Website Accessibility and Goals
    • It’s the right thing to do as we want to be inclusive to all types of people.
    • Even if you don’t care about morals or ethics, it is the right thing to do from the business side. Businesses want as many customers, clients, and dollars coming in as possible.
    • Also, depending on where you are in the world, different laws require web sites to be accessible. Not doing so can put you in jeopardy of litigation in the courts. So this has moved beyond we should, and is fully into we have to make sites accessible.
  • Review of Wave Plugin
    • Handy free validator that looks at your design, shows you where you have errors, and how to fix them.
  • Let’s get a bit of hands on review from yesterday.
  • Absolute->Block – keep it functional on mobile (don’t overlap elements)

11:00 Designing with Accessibility in Mind: Mothers Day Brunch

This week in class we are going to work with Web Accessibility in mind. We are going to create a 1 page website for famous Mother’s Day Brunch at “The GAWD Cafe”, that hip restaurant that everyone loves going to.

This project is to be hand coded AND include a desktop and mobile version. Use CSS media queries to adapt to your screen size. No horizontal scroll bars.

I am giving you a PDF of information from the client – very similar to the workflow you would get in the real world.

You have to use the copy supplied by the client, along with any free to use image sites online, to create a single page which features the Cafe’s Mothers Day Brunch information.

If the image (or component of image) isn’t from a free photos site like UnSplash or Pexels, you can’t use it. Let’s practice professional workflow and get good, big, quality assets for for free.

Create a logo with AI? Create a logo in Illustrator? Just use type? Incorporate the GAWD logo? Up to you.

This is to be stylized in a Mothers Day colors – one of the reasons we do this project at this time is there are so many similar, bright, colors and many ways for us to use text in this project. Don’t have all of your text one color with one background, think about places to use headings, subheadings, paragraphs, list items, etc.

Think of this as a test to make sure you can hit the branding and messaging of the client, making the project feel as “mothers day” as you possibly can, while practicing accessible design.

We are going to WAVE your project at presentations. We want to see zero:

  • Errors
  • Contrast Errors
  • Alerts

Create a folder called lastNameMothersDay with your project.

12:30 Steve Jobs

Based on more than forty interviews with Steve Jobs conducted over two years–as well as interviews with more than 100 family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues–Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur

Read along with Mr. Cronin. Improve literacy, word decoding, enjoy a nice story, and unplug from the world.
