11:00 Second Semester College Course @ Champlain College

Next semester GAWD and Champlain College are going to pilot a partnership to have GAWD students take a college course on campus at Champlain College. The course we selected with the help of Champlain Faculty is going to be “Creativity and Play“. Here is our instructor Jin Liu and her course Syllabus. By taking a college course on campus, you’ll explore a new learning environment, meet and work with a college professor, and learn how to use Canvas, a popular college learning platform. This experience is about more than earning college credit. It’s about building confidence, gaining independence, developing new skills, and preparing for life after high school.

You don’t have to be planning on college to benefit from this opportunity! Whether you’re considering college, entering the workforce, or exploring other options, this experience has something for everyone. You might discover new interests, recognize hidden talents, or gain confidence in an unfamiliar environment. My goal is for everyone to approach this opportunity with an open mind, a positive attitude, and a willingness to participate. Your future is full of possibilities, and this is a chance to explore them.

The focus on this course is creativity, and applying in off computer uses. One of our Champlain partners said of this course “If the students do well in this, they are pretty much writing their acceptance letter for the Champlain Game Design Program.” We will be using paper, board games, cards, and all sorts of methods to improve the creativity of games, the gameplay, compared to worrying about a texture or model. It will be a perfect combination between the concepts at college, and the technical creativity in our classroom.

This is the type of work that is harder for AI. New human ideas. Thinking different.

As this is a pilot, we haven’t done this before, but here are some basic 50,000 foot notes as we move toward the spring.

  • Class will be at Champlain College on Tuesdays from roughly 11:45 to roughly 1. Details to come. We really wanted to get you on campus for your second college course. Don’t forget, you have the chance to earn 3 college credits this semester for Digital Animation right in our classroom.
  • Second session will be in GAWD as a work session, where we are … working, presenting to each other in groups and individuals. The Champlain session @ GAWD will be facilitated by Mr. Cronin and Mr. Bohmann, and we will be following the instructions from our lead Champlain Instructor. I would imagine the second session will be later on in the week – not Monday or Tuesday. Again, this is a new adventure to all of us. We will adapt and make it a success.
  • 3 college credits – free to you as a student if you use your Dual Enrollment / Fast Forward voucher.

So – that is where we are going with this class, and we are excited. How does this sound? This is an opportunity only GAWD students would take part in, and it would double the college credits that you earn in GAWD. And push ourselves, which is exactly what high school and college should be like.

12:40 A Gentleman in Moscow

Imagine being sentenced to spend your life inside a luxury hotel. In A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, Count Alexander Rostov faces exactly that. Trapped in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel after the Russian Revolution, he builds unexpected friendships and watches history unfold outside. The novel asks an important question: Can you still build a meaningful life when your freedom is taken away?

A class read-along gives us a chance to slow down, disconnect from screens, and get lost in a great book together. As we read, you’ll naturally build your vocabulary, strengthen your reading skills, and experience a story without notifications, tabs, or other digital distractions. Think of it as a chance to unplug, relax, and let your imagination do the work.

1:00 Afternoon Break (15 minutes)

1:15 Afternoon Practice & Production

Only 5 minutes as it’s Wednesday – Dailies at 1:20!

1:20 Dailies

1:25 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:

  • Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
  • Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
  • Unplug

At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.
