10:10 Midweek Morning Meetings

Wednesday’s we will have our Midweek Morning Meetings.

You and I will meet 1:1 and we can:

  • See what you are missing for assignments
  • Go over the previous weeks T&E grades
  • Go over anything you are pretty confused about so I can review

When not meeting with me – I want you working on Production.

Turning in missing work

  • Create folder on public drive that is your last name.
  • Upload work there with correct file names.
  • Let me know. Only letting me know that day when you have uploaded the work will I know to merge your work into the entire classes, and then grade it.

10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)

11:00 Life of a Sound Designer

This morning, we are going to watch a clip that shows a little of the life of a Sound Designer from VICE.

Then we will watch a GAWD project from a billion years ago that used sound creatively to make our most popular project ever on YouTube.

But first – here is what they did to my boy, after 4.5 million views, they did an audio swap and ruined it (as it became too popular). This year let’s create something with more than 4.5 million views!

But of course, we have the original. 🙂

11:25 Sound Design: Starcraft II

This week your main GAWD project will be working as a Sound Designer. You have zero control of the visuals in the project. You have full control of the audio. This is common in the industry, you have to “make it work”.

You will be cutting the soundtrack for a game called StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. It is all cut scenes (no actual gameplay) so it is all about action and getting a player to want to play the game. We have chosen this trailer for a range of reasons:

  • Quick cuts with different scenes requiring different types of sounds.
  • Organic and inorganic mechanical sounds.
  • A pacing and tempo that at the end reaches a visual (and soon sonic) apogee.

While you collect sounds this week and create your edit, I want you to really think about what we saw with the peppers, and the bananas… you don’t need to have an exact “rocket thruster turn on” sound effect when a basic propane cylinder torch would be just as good.

Think creatively about your sounds and create the most realistic trailer you can possible think of. Use multiple audio tracks to layer sounds. Consider background ambient audio as well as specific event sounds.

Use any sound resource you can, but I know that Freesound gets through our filter.

When complete save your final edit as lastNameSoundDesign.mp4.

11:35 Lunch

  • No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
  • You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

12:10 Blender

Let’s continue our work with the idea of the ball bouncing.

This week we will add in a couple more bounces, as well as add in rotation to the animation. I would also like to have a little “neutral wiggle” at the end for realism.

Start applying this knowledge to other projects; it’s not just for balls bouncing!

12:40 A Gentleman in Moscow

A Gentleman in Moscow is a reader’s dream — a wonder-full, nuanced story full of wit, insight, and imagination.

Read along with Mr. Cronin. Improve literacy, word decoding, enjoy a nice story, and unplug from the world.

1:00 Afternoon Break (15 minutes)

1:15 Afternoon Practice & Production

Starcraft Sound Design

  • lastNameSoundDesign.mp4

DH4: Preproduction for Covered Bridges Intro

  • lastNameDH_4.jpg

Week 4 Agency

  • lastNameAgency_1.jpg through lastNameAgency_3.jpg

1:20 Dailies

1:25 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:

  • Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
  • Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
  • Unplug

At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.
