10:10 Last Looks

Last looks is when I give students about 15 minutes to upload their completed work to the weekly folder on the public, in a folder that is your last name. Remember we aren’t doing any work today – this is just when we turn it in. Plan on not doing more than scan / upload each Monday morning – and the scanner may have a line!

10:50 Morning Break

11:00 Critiques

Each week we will upload our work on Monday. I will then present your work to the class. Each project I will pick a student to practice giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
11:30 DH3: Theme Park Design Competition

This week our Design Homework will continue our focus on pre-production and concept art. We are going to take part in a Design Competition through the Ringling College of Art and Design based around the idea of a Themed Cart.
“A Themed Cart within the themed entertainment industry is typically about the size of a car; anywhere between 6’ x 8’ to 10’ x 16’ – roughly car sized. A Themed Cart must function with an operational purpose within the themed environment. This can include the selling of food or merchandise, providing location-based information to guests or a combination of both.”
So this is a Cart that will sit in Universal Studios that sells merch, food, or gives help to visitors. What you decide to sell or info you give is up to you, but it must feel overtly themed to whatever your business model is.
Some examples from the real world:

Create a piece of concept art with front / side / top sketches of the same Themed Cart.
Each of the 3 versions = 1/3rd of the grade – all on 1 piece of paper. There will be students who don’t draw the 3 views, and will get a max of a 33 on this project. Luckily you read the instructions, so it won’t be you.
Call your file lastNameDH_3.jpg.
Yes – you can safely assume you will be creating this in Blender, animating it, and submitting it to this Design Competition. Be proud of what you do, build your brand. Nothing is worse than starting with poor concept art and a bad idea to ruin a multi-step project.

2:20 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.
