Game Design

Beta Testing Week

Previously we have worked on our Alpha testing, which is early days in a production, and uses internal team (GAWD students) to test. This week we are moving to Beta testing.

Beta testing in video game development is a phase where a nearly finished game is released to a group of real players so developers can find problems before the official launch.

The Beta Testing Process

Find a non-GAWD student to play your game. Tell them you will need about 5-10 minutes of your time. This can happen any time during GAWD production today, and tomorrow, up to the EOD.

Beta testing can’t happen during:

  • class reading
  • speed designs
  • English
  • etc – let’s use the time we have scheduled

If truly can’t think of 5 people to play your game (nobody believes that BTW), you are going to walk into the hallway smile at someone and get them in to play your game. Meet real people. Make eye contact.

Have them play the game, and I will hand them a clipboard and pen to give their feedback (no email or form, quick and easy with paper). When complete I get the clipboard, take your sheet, and give you a fresh one. I will be collating the information, so we have a single document that outlines the positives and negatives of your game through the Beta testing.

While your game is being played all team members should be watching the testing to see what works, what needs revision, what the player is doing, etc.

10:50 Morning Break (10 minutes)

11:00 Skills Production

11:35 1984

Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984) is a dystopian novel by George Orwell that explores totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and the manipulation of truth through the story of Winston Smith in the superstate of Oceania, ruled by the omnipresent Party and its figurehead, Big Brother.

Read along with Mr. Cronin. Improve literacy, word decoding, enjoy a nice story, and unplug from the world.

11:55 Lunch

  • No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
  • You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.

2:15 Dailies

2:20 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:

  • Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
  • Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
  • Unplug

At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.

2:40 Dismissal
