10:10 Group Game Development: Cookie Clicker Variant

usability testing

This week you are going to take your front end web development skills make a clicker based idle game in a small group.

The core gameplay loop is:

  • Click to gain a resource (cookies) – your team will decide what you are earning.
  • Spend resources on upgrades – your $, what you can use to get upgrades like an idle clicker?
  • Automate production – setup the idle clicker.

Common traits of the these games include:

  • Minimal required input after automation begins, once the idle clickers are up and running.
  • Prestige systems, do you get a badge at 10,000 widgets? 100,000 widgets?

You and your groups task:

In a month it is the summer, it is time to see your skillset one way or another. Some of you are GREAT at art, some others not – so download or use AI to get the art, just as in the real world. Some of you are at programming, some others not – – so download or use AI to get the code, just as in the real world.

This project is really mimic a real world challenge, and frankly you don’t all need to reinvent the wheel each project. There are art resources out there to use (AI and free), there are coding resources out there to use (AI and free), it is time to show us what you can do. Does this mean you program it yourselves, but download the art? Ok. How about use AI to get the code, and create your own art? OK! Figure it out based on the needs of the projects and the strengths of your team.

You and your group can decide on which grade tier to shoot for:

  • To be eligible for the A you must have
    • Prestige system with at least 2 achievable (and demonstratable) tiers
  • To be eligible for the B you must have
    • Functioning Auto Clicker Upgrade
  • To be eligible for the C you must have
    • Functioning Auto Clicker
  • To be eligible for the D you must have
    • Clickable element with score

** Each level includes the lower grade.

Presenting Games Friday at 11AM to GAWD2

Friday at 11 AM you will be presenting your games to Mr. Bohmann and the GAWD2 students. The 8 of them will play every game and in the end give a “Best in Show” award. The winners of the best in show Award automatically gets a 105 for this project – and since we are earning college credit for this semester, this would really help as we finish out the year.

Mood Board for Project

You and your partner take the image above as a base and I want you to create a Mood Board for your project.

A mood board is a visual collection of images, colors, textures, typography, objects, and design inspiration used to communicate the overall look, feeling, and style direction of a project.

Place at least 5 images that demonstrate the style that you and your partner plan to have for you art. For example if I was going to do this I may explore Ancient Greek Art Styles, and those decorative buttons on the left may end up being my clickable element.

There is a moodBoard folder on the Public. Upload your completed project there by 10:45 to present before break! Save your file as lastNamelastName.jpg.

11:00 Critiques

Each week we will upload our work on Monday. I will then present your work to the class. Each project I will pick a student to practice giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.

If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.

11:20 Group Game Development: Cookie Clicker Variant

usability testing

When complete you will create a folder called lastNamelastNameClicker in the public for your project to be saved.

You WILL be hosting players on Friday at 11AM on one of your local machines. The other partners monitor will be turned off from 11-11:30 during Presentations (or until we finish them).

  • Unplug

At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.
