10:05 Attendance
10:10 Admin Presentation

- Welcome to CTE presentation from Assistant Director Mr. Wright.

- We want to start a pilot program with Champlain College as so many kids go there from GAWD.
- We have picked EGD 102 – Game History
- It would likely be on campus on Friday mornings, and then maybe in GAWD on Tuesday, either remote, or asynchronous. Still fleshing out details.
Course description:
Game History is an integrated, cross-disciplinary hands-on history class where students actively research the evolution and history of games through the lenses of design, art, technology, business, society and culture. Working with resources from the Game History Teaching Collection, and from the perspective of their discipline as a game developer, students will play, study and research historical to contemporary games. In this way, students will discover the nexus of relationships driving game development.
One of our former students is in it as we speak, and said:
One of my professors at Champlain has a super cool collection of old games and consoles (including things like the Magnavox-Odyssey)! They rotate through their collection in a gallery. The class is game history, It’s really good and informative. It helps people appreciate games and also things like early computing!
How does that sound to people in the room? Interesting? Something we should try to move forward? This would be a 3 credit college course, and start you on the way of earning college credit while in the GAWD program.
10:30 Last Looks

Last Looks will happen at the start of each week. In this time we are going to be finalizing, perfecting, and uploading our work to the Public Drive for submission.
Assume that the Last Looks time is NOT for doing the work (do that the week before / weekend) and more for getting file names correct, and assets uploaded correctly.
Inside the Public Drive you will find a folder called week_03. Inside this folder, always start by creating a folder with your last name. It is inside the subfolder where your work will go. Here are the projects which are going to be due today:
Isometric Room

Design Homework 3: Concept Art for Isometric Room

Week 3 Agency
- lastNameAgency_1.jpg through lastNameAgency_3.jpg
Let’s copy down our assets BEFORE break!
10:50 Morning Break

11:00 Critiques

Each week we will upload our work on Monday. I will then present your work to the class. Each project I will pick a student to practice giving constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is a type of feedback that offers specific and actionable advice to help employees to improve. In the professional setting we need to be to talk professionally about the work, even if you don’t “love” the person who created it.
If selected, you will pick 1 thing that works, and 1 thing to improve upon next time. Remember we are separating the Design from the Designer. We are looking for actionable input.
11:30 Sound Design Intro

Sound design is the process of creating, editing, and arranging sounds for movies, games, TV, or other media. It uses sound effects and ambience to create emotion, realism, and atmosphere.
- FreeSound account – we will all need one. Let’s download a file to ensure we can get files. WAV and MP3 ONLY! Trust me.
- We will watch a quick Vice documentary short on Sound Design in the Games Industry. It is this workflow we will be practicing this week.
11:40 Design Homework 4: Sound

This week we are going to start focusing on Sound. We will need to control sound both for Animation / Video Production, and Game Development.
This week I am simple challenging you to draw what Sound could mean to you. I don’t want to give away too many topics, but it could be literal, abstract, totally up to you.
How could you visualize Sound?
Save your file as lastNameDH_4.jpg.
11:55 Lunch

- No food in the room / eat in the Cafe.
- You are welcome to return to the room when you have finished eating and work / hang out.
12:25 Attendance and Article
12:30 Sound Design Intro

Let’s get some practice with Premiere and the ideas of Sound Design.
Premiere will be our Video Editing software, but we will obviously be using sound with it.
Today is about tinkering, learning, playing, breaking, laughing, etc.
12:50 A Gentleman in Moscow

Imagine being sentenced to spend your life inside a luxury hotel. In A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, Count Alexander Rostov faces exactly that. Trapped in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel after the Russian Revolution, he builds unexpected friendships and watches history unfold outside. The novel asks an important question: Can you still build a meaningful life when your freedom is taken away?
A class read-along gives us a chance to slow down, disconnect from screens, and get lost in a great book together. As we read, you’ll naturally build your vocabulary, strengthen your reading skills, and experience a story.
1:10 Afternoon Break

1:25 Speed Design

Speed Designs are 10 minute sprints in GAWD where we practice. It could be any medium – 3D, 2D, video, programming, etc.
1:40 Afternoon Practice & Production

Design Homework 4: Sound

Week 4 Agency
- lastNameAgency_1.jpg through lastNameAgency_3.jpg
2:15 Dailies

2:20 “19 Minutes”

Every day in GAWD will end with “19 Minutes” of silent reading. Closing down our day with silent reading provides many benefits:
- Improve Literacy Skills / Reading Stamina
- Create space for a small reading meditation where we can disconnect from the world and get lost in a story
- Unplug
At the end I will 3 students and ask for a 1 sentence explanation of what happened.
2:40 Dismissal
