10:20 Monday Modeling

Let’s continue with some Monday Modeling. We’ll make a game asset for Unity – a Thor inspired Hammer.

Game Assets are made from models. Models have faces. The more faces – the more resource hungry your game becomes. Our goal is to create a high detail object without all of the geometry.

How can we accomplish this? UV and normal mapping.

  • First we’ll model a low poly hammer.
  • Second we’ll mark off the seams and do some UV Mapping
  • Third, we’ll duplicate our model and then add a high level of detail through sculpting
  • Fourth, we’ll create a normal map and an ambient occlusion map from our high detail model
  • Fifth, we’ll import the low poly hammer to Unity – and we’ll apply the high detail normal maps that we made in Blender.

If you want to be a game designer – this will be a common workflow.

This process will create small file sizes and a high quality final product with less faces! We won’t get all this done today – so we’ll focus on the modeling first. We’ll map the UVs next Monday.
