New Photo Assignment: Street Photography

At the core, Street/Documentary Photography is spontaneous and captures activity as it is happening. Unscripted and interesting. Emotions, action, interesting camera angles.

Shoot lots of images. Select your favorite 5. and delete the rest. Capture the activity around you. Street Photography is unscripted! Have your camera ready. Take a trip into your town. You’ve got a week, plan well. Maybe you can get your Urban photo for the Long Term assignment while you are at it.

You may want to play around with tones like B&W, sepia and / or do some selective editing or masking.

Create a five slide presentation with your images on Black or white backgrounds
Include Metadata(aperture, shutter speed, ISO)

10:10 You’re Hired

Scenario

You are a senior manager for a small web / media design firm. As you know, small businesses are often short on time and resources. As a small firm, you are really connected with the community and finding the right replacement is key to your team and brand.

A valuable full time Junior Animator gave you three weeks notice. She determined that she is interested in taking a break, spreading her wings and exploring the US on her motorcycle. Her job responsibilities included:

Conceptualize, develop, and animate ideas for a variety of projects, including everything from logo animations to informative videos.
Storyboard projects for both video and animation.
Create a variety of motion graphics projects with different subjects and visuals for many different clients.
Help out on editing video projects when needed.
Participate in creative meetings with other departments to help improve projects.
Handle multiple projects with competing deadlines.

11:00 Photography Break – Outdoors

A prime lens is the one with a fixed focal length which is what your 50mm lens is. Our 50mm lenses
are roughly the way the human eye sees the world. Good for just about any type of photography.

You cannot zoom a 50mm lens. It is fixed! So you must walk closer if you want to get a full frame
shot.Your 50mm lens is easy to get a shallow depth of field as the f/stop goes all the way down to f1.8.

Your 18-55mm lens is called a Standard lens. It does not have a fixed focal length. You can adjust.

Some of you have a telephoto lens. A telephoto lens is a long focus lens. The purpose of this lens is to be able to take pictures that are far away and the length of lens allow the photographer to bring the image closer. A telephoto lens has a varied focal length from 75-300mm.

Goal today: Composition, Manual (auto ISO), properly exposed in focus shots. I’ll work with each of you.

When we return to the classroom, select, edit and post your best picture in the CAWD2 dailies folder.

11:50 – 12:25 Photo Restoration Basics

Photoshop is the tool to use for photo restoration. I’ve seen freelancers make good money working on repairing old photos and preparing them for digital archival.

We’ll explore the process of touching up photos today. The techniques used translate into the post processing work you are/can do with the photos you are taking in class.

Tools: Repair, patch, clone stamp, groups, masks, adjustment layers
