10:10 Short Work Session

10:15 – College Resource Practice

In yesterday’s presentation a few slides in were several college search engines. The purpose is to provide you with stats, facts, figures, course information, majors and primarily a good overview of the school/program you are looking at.

Let’s look at two of the resources from yesterday and search for MECA – Maine College of Art and Design.

  • Petersen’s College Search
  • College Navigator

  • What kinds of programs and majors do the have?
  • What is the cost?
  • Is it a big school? How many students?
  • Where is it located exactly?
  • Are you required to live on campus?

Guest Speaker: London Dupere – We will bring our chairs next door at 10:25 am and take our break after the presentation. https://meca.edu/

11:10 Manual Mode Photography continued….

Yesterday we moved our camera’s settings to M for Manual mode on the dial. This setting allows for the most creativity, but it is also the most challenging.

Proper Exposure, clarity and quality are primary goals in photography.

The amount if light your camera gets is based upon three things:

  • Aperture (f-stops)
  • Shutter Speed (from 5″ seconds to 1/4000 of a second)
  • ISO (amount of charged light to hit the sensor)

Photo Story – you can shoot in any mode you like….

A photo story is a means of visual storytelling. Images are used to tell the viewer what happened. If we were looking at pics from the Olympics, we’d expect to see competition, emotion, failure, success, teamwork, something unbelievable, etc….

To get started with a photo story, you’ll need a story to document. In most cases the things you find personally interesting can make great photo stories.

Today’s Scenario: As a newly minted photojournalist (real job by the way), Create a photo story that captures what is happening in this HS/Tech Center right now. Your story should tell a visual narrative using a series of photographs. 10 Photos is a good number to shoot for and about all you have time for.

Photo Requirements:

  1. Theme or Focus: Try to select shots that resonate with you like lunch, studying, school spirit, extracurricular activities, learning or combination of things. (no cameras in bathrooms)
  2. Composition: Pay attention to composition, using the rule of thirds, leading lines, and other techniques to create visually interesting images.
  3. Lighting: Experiment with different lighting conditions to create mood and atmosphere. Consider using natural light, artificial light, or both.
  4. Perspective: Use different angles and perspectives to tell your story. Consider shooting from above, below, or at eye level. Consider Depth of Field with Aperture – Consider stopping or blurring action with Shutter Speed.
  5. Storytelling: Each photo should contribute to the overall narrative of your story. The viewer should know that we are in a school. Try to get your images flow together seamlessly.
  6. Editing: Edit your photos to enhance their quality and consistency. Consider adjusting brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness. Obviously time is a factor, so you’ll have to work quick.

Remember, we want in focus, properly exposed photos.

Budget Your Time:
11:25 – 11:55 Capture Photos
11:55 – 12:24 – Edit and Assemble your photos.
12:25 Submit your photos. If you finish at 12:20, I’ll let you start early lunch
Google Slides – centered image, black or white backgrounds.

I will put each of the photo stories up during lunch for viewing.

Drop your slideshow in the Photo Story dropbox. This is not a graded assignment. This is practice. Just like a sport, the better you practice, the more prepared you are for when it counts. Practice with purpose You showed up today for practice, so let’s go. Ask questions. Have fun.
