10:10 CAWD2 heads to College!
CCV classes begin this Friday
Classes run from 10:15am-1pm each Friday from Sept. 6th to Dec. 13th with the exception of Thanksgiving
The bus will leave CTE at 10am sharp – students need to meet Ms. Emmy Charron in the EHS lobby at 9:55 at the absolute latest. Your attendance will be taken.
Students will get back around 1:15. I will let Rich Wright know for cafeteria/lunch details. You should grab (and eat) breakfast before you get on the bus.
The JavaScript and Drawing classes are not pass / fail. You will receive a grade from your CCV instructor. That grade has nothing to do with your CAWD2 grade. If you fall behind, you need to communicate with your professor. It is your responsibility to manage your work outside of class. I cannot help you.
Friday afternoons (when we return from CCV) will be designated for CCV work / 20% projects.
10:15 Monday Mail (on a Tuesday!) – let’s see what everyone is saying….
Every Monday (or in this case Tuesday) for five minutes you are going to check your email for any updates, new mail, etc… The school and professionals in the workplace use email (generally) as a primary tool for communication. Delete or archive email that you do not need anymore. We are going to practice keeping a clean inbox and responding and staying up to date on communications from the school, colleges and colleagues.
You can also set up filters for your email, unsubscribe from email lists and customize your inbox.
10:15 Abstract Photography
Photography has the power to isolate a fragment of a composition and turn it into art and to freeze shapes and images to take on new meaning far different from their original intent.
Abstract Definition: existing in though or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence
The goal of today’s lesson is to build confidence and familiarity with your new camera, while also practicing framing shots that isolate an element or color to create an interesting abstract. Wow!, that’s three vocabulary words right there!
The other goal of today’s lesson is to shoot images that are in focus (always a goal)!
The easiest approach to abstract photography is the close up shot. Close-ups remove the context of what is in the viewfinder as well as emphasizes the texture and graphic elements.
You can create a close up shot by changing the Zoom (changing the field of view) or walking closer to your subject. In some ways Zoom and Focal Length are similar.
So, Focal Length is important to know. Focal length determines the lens field of view.
Focal Length is the space from the camera sensor to the lens. This measurement is measured in millimeters.
- Wide Lens – 35mm
- Normal Lens – 50mm
- Telephoto Lens – 75-300mm
Using the zoom feature on your camera will adjust the focal length on some lenses.
Activity, we’ll head out as a group to the front courtyard. Find and shoot at least 12 subjects that will serve as your abstracts. Look at different angles. To get 12 good shots you might need to take 60.
Don’t worry, you won’t run out of film!
Shoot in Automatic mode and use Manual Focus
Try to get in focus shots!
When we get back to the classroom, select your favorite shot and put up on your screen before break.

11:50 CAWD Sweatshirt – Sketch Session
Each year we create a new CAWD Sweatshirt. Designs are created by students and the winning design will be put to print. We will use Adobe Illustrator as the tool to create the design. Sweatshirts will be distributed around Thanksgiving.
Today, we are going to do nothing more than gathering some ideas and doing some general concept sketching. This concept is simple. Draw whatever pops into your mind. Don’t worry about revisions or quality of the art. My only ask is that you play around with some ideas in your notebook until 12:15. You do not need to show anything, this is just a brainstorm first session.
