10:10 Blender – Organic & Hard Surface Modeling

GAWD students really like Blender. Blender as you know is a great tool for building assets for game engines, simulations, models, visualizations and animations.

If you enjoy modeling, then you might just be interested in a variety of other fields too… Architectural design, 3D CAD (Computer aided design) and engineering are a few fields that do a lot of 3D modeling and prototype work.

Organic Modeling in Blender uses topology that flows, deforms and moves. Characters, organic objects, animals, plants and creatures generally fall into the organic style of modeling.

Hard Surface Modeling can be attributed to man made inorganic type objects. Think buildings, cars, machines, sci-fi assets, computers. Edges are usually hard and made up of 90 degree angles. Lots of bevels and use of booleans for interesting and complex shapes. These types of models can be great in game engines as background and scene items.

Low Poly Modeling is both a technique and an aesthetic. Low poly uses a minimal number of polygons (faces, edges, and vertices) to create a 3D model. It has performance advantages for video games due to smaller files sizes. From a design standpoint, low poly has clean, sharp shapes and edges and feels more minimal.

I’m thinking about going to Maine this winter for a weekend. So let’s do some modeling – we’ll start with a lighthouse and do a little sculpting too.

11:00 LTA – Photography Shares

At the end of your slideshow or when presenting – you may talk about your images and say a few words.

  • For Sure: Point out your favorite image / explain why it is your favorite image
  • Not A Bad Idea: To share any techniques that you used – we love technical terms!
  • Indubitably: Let us know if you have improved as a photographer and why

I will ask you two questions from this group of questions:

  • Have you shared any of your learning with others?
  • What was a challenge you faced during this project?
  • What photography assignment did you enjoy the most?
  • How has your study of photography changed how you approach taking photos?
  • What type of photography do you enjoy the most?
  • Do you plan to continue exploring photography?
